Some months ago my little and ring finger on my left hand went numb. I put up with it for over a fortnight. but the numbness seemed to cause a lack of sensation and my fingers feel cold all the time, which makes them ache, and I am forever having to massage them. I also experience weakness in this arm when trying to pick things up etc. I have been told by my doctor I will need conduction tests and am on a waiting list to go for them. Last week the practice nurse at my doctors surgery told me that these tests were very painful and in fact said she wouldn't be able to carry them out. I suffer with stress, depression panic attacks etc ,and am feeling increasingly worried about chickening out. Can anyone please tell me what these tests are really like?

  • I have referred a number of patients for nerve conduction tests. Some said it was very painful. Some said moderately painful. Some said not much at all. Point here is that you will probably not know until you try it.It is the ulnar nerve that is affected with the fingers involved. Have you tried to have a massage therapists work on the muscles in the chest and arm are involved ? This may give you some relief or really help. Try to find a massage therapist who has experience in treating this condition.

  • Thank-you for your reply Ralph. I guess I will have to keep my fingers crossed (no pun intended) about the pain involved. I haven't tried massage no! I will have to see if my doctor can recommend someone though, as the only ones I have seen locally seem to be hostessed by eastern European girls whose expertise may lie in other areas I expect. lol.
