Not sure what to make of the situation

My son just turned 2. With the exception of his language ability (doesn't say many words...mainly babbles) he appears to be normal. He knows what we're saying and responds well to them (i.e. 'time for bed' and 'dinnertime') the problem arises when he gets overly upset when he wants something but is unable to verbally communicate what it is that he wants. He can help get dressed, understands direction, can climb stairs, kick balls, throw balls, play with cars and books (not sure if he's reading per-se). He also doesn't much care for hugging and kisses except for before bed.
So basically its the 2 things i guess. The not speaking much, and the not liking to be hugged. Moreso the talking thing. I'm scared he may be autistic, my wife insists he's "learning at his own pace"
Please help people, let me know what you thing. I just want to know one way or the other
