NHS 18 week wait

Hi,

I am in the UK, and am undergoing tests at the moment on the NHS. My problem is that I have been given an appointment with the consultant 1 month after my next test. This will make that consultation after the "18 weeks" that the government promote as being the "maximum time" you will wait from referral to *treatement*:

There are a few "acceptable" reasons (their words) why it may not be 18 weeks, none of them valid in my case. I have complained to the consultant to no avail so far. I will be writing to the chief exec of the trust next, but wondered if anyone could point me to some actual legislation I can mention, or has anyone been in a similar position and complained to somebody else to expedite their case?

many thanks
Rob

  • Hi Rob, I'm also in the UK & I understand your frustration, here's what I done to get around it......I booked a private appointment with the consultant which I got very quickly, after seeing him he ordered tests "Privately" when they sent me the appointment out for them I then contacted them and said that I wanted the tests done under NHS as it was going to be expensive, I got the NHS appointment the following week only having to wait 2wks after that for the actual tests. I know this should not be the way things happen, but this is the system we are stuck with. I did have to pay for the initial private consultation but it wasn't that expensive & worth getting seen to quicker. If you try this I hope it works as quickly for you. It helps to be extremely nice to the Consultant as he will be more helpful....stroke the ego....:D Good luck.....:)

  • Well that seems to go against all my feelings regarding having paid into the NHS for many years and hardly ever had any use out of it.. I am in the first place writing to the Chief Exec....to be honest I've experienced private v NHS treatment in the past and it stinks....the chumminess of the consultant when bupa were involved against the feeling they can't get you out the door quick enough on the NHS...

  • My complaint although not replied to directly as yet has resulted in a new appointment, 3 weeks sooner, so well worth writing that letter for anyone reading this thread in a similar position....
