My Mom is 60 yrs. old and unemployed at the time. She has been very ill for a year now and her health insurance ran out 2 months ago. Her symptoms are an extremely swollen abdomen, pain & pressure, heartburn, fatigue, and now she is unable to eat properly. It seems as if her food is not breaking down properly after she eats. Two bites of a sandwich feel as if she ate an entire large meal. Now she fears eating because of how badly it makes her feel......can anyone offer any suggestions of what this could be? Before she lost her insurance she tested negative for cancer....please help me help her????

  • Something you can try without spending a ton of money is an allergen elimination diet. Start off with a few days of nothing but water, juice, fresh fruits and a little bit of unseasoned meat; then each week add a new ingredient like milk, wheat, nuts, soy, corn. Keep a journal of how the body reacts to each new allergen. The key to success though is recognizing all the forms of the allergen, ie: reading the fine print on the ingredients label and talking to the manufacturer of the food.

  • You didn't mention if you mom is experiencing diarrhoea as a symptom, but if she is you may want to start researching "Celiacs Disease"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celiac_diseaseIt is becomming much more common in adults in north america

  • I suddenly started bloating and discomfort. I was finally willing to admit that it might be an "all of a sudden allergy" and eliminated foods and observed. Yep it was gluten. Don't give up. She may be very advanced, and body reacts quickly. Thank you for being such a wonderful daughter to your mom.

  • I get all those symptoms with eatting foods which my body dont tollerate nowdays well. The cheap way to work this out is to do something like Azaral suggested (or what Im suggesting below which is similar). The way Im getting to know all my recent food intollences, (Ive spent many mths trying to work them all out but still havent got them completely all worked out and my doctors wouldnt test for them other than test me me celiac disease cause it was in my family (gluten allergy ..which was negative), is cut out all food and drink except water for 3 days (NO coffee or caffine during this time) then add ONE thing only be it a food or drink back into the diet per day. (This is what Im currently doing...yeah its very hard to do..but if we are suffering enough we will do it). One can be sensitive even to things like fruit and veg. I think I have a problem with corn and also to oranges (I'll soon add them back into my diet to see for sure). One can also be intollerant to supplements..so these should be checked as well eg vitamin pills. A intollerence reaction to a food can happen anywhere up to 48 hrs after you have eatten it. Avoid foods which make one more tired or give other affects.. one can try them again in a few mths and see if things have changed.

  • When you say that your mom tested negative for cancer, what test's did she have? She needs and endoscopy and to have her liver tested if not done so already.

  • Has your mom ever had her gullbladder checked? I had a bad gullbladder and i had the same symptoms. I understand that she doesn't have any insurance but i learned that getting it checked was the most important thing. I almost waited to long but i got checked and it was found that it was severely bad and had to be removed. Please don't wait to get her checked.

  • The distended (enlarged) abdomen indicates it could be a very serious disease. There could be a serious infection that if not treated on time will destroy her organs and eventually kill her. In this case enlargement happens due to puss build up inside. In any case this is something not to play with. Your mom should go to the emergency room of a good hospital in your city and since she can't eat they have to admit her even if she can't pay. After she comes out she can get state assistance since she is not working to pay for the bill. Please don't delay, your mother is probably in a grave situation!
