I have been sick on and off all year with glandular fever like symptoms, had many blood tests for that which all turned out negative, liver count was fine and everything. Just over a month ago i was so sick i went to the Emergency department to get checked out, they found that my liver count was abnormal, everything except Bilirubin levels were not right. That doctor pretty much said i was an alcoholic and it was probably hepatitis. I am 19, i was drinking most weekends, i only really started drinking in the last 18 months.. but what first year uni student doesn't drink lots?
I also had pneumonia. I went back to my doc for a follow up blood test 3 days later, and the result was that the function of my liver had gotten worse (and i certainly didn't drink in those 3 days). My hepatitis check was negative.
I wondered if my contraceptive pill had caused the liver problems, because i had gone on it between having healthy LFT's earlier this year (when they checked for glandular fever, twice) and then unhealthy ones. My doctor told me to stop drinking alcohol and stop taking my pill and organized a follow up blood test for a month later.
I was off the alcohol for nearly 7 weeks and had no withdrawals like the Dr at emergency said i would (she prescribed me Diazepam tablets!!) because i am supposedly an alcoholic.
My follow up blood test last week came back saying that my liver function was normal again, and the doc said i can drink but not too much.
yesterday was my sisters birthday, so we had some drinks at her place and played cards nearly all night. I was on my 5th can (which was going to be my last anyway) and i felt excruciating pain in my liver area, which made me cry.
i have decided that whatever is wrong with my liver, whether it was caused by alcohol in the first place, it obviously cannot handle it now, and i am not drinking again any time soon. i still dont know what has been causing my other symptoms.
About 5 times i have had the other combination of symptoms including really bad headache, fever, sore throat, lethargy, been very emotional, extremely swollen and tender glands in my throat region and the back of my neck, to the point that i cannot move my head because they are so swollen and its really painful. Each time i have had it, i have spent nearly a week in bed and felt really exhausted and frustrated for a few weeks to follow.
Because of other circumstances i cannot control i have been to 4 separate doctors and so not one of them knows the entire story.
I don't know what else can be done for me, does anyone have any suggestions?
