Lingering Pain in calf muscle

I am a 44 year old male that is very active and athletic. About 4 years ago I landed off balance on my left leg playing Basketball and had a very sharp pain in my calf . At first it was really painful and hard to walk. My leg would just give out on me from time to time making me think that it might be nerve damage. The pain comes and goes still and I can't really run for any period of time. It is really strange because most of the time I feel fine and then I will get this sharp again.I have tried all kinds of treatment but it just won't go away. Maybe I have torn something if that was the case I would think it would hurt all the time. Any advice would be appreciated.
