Knee Bone Bruise

Please help! I am a teenager, and I am a competitive swimmer. I began having knee pain in July of 2013. The knee pain went away, but it soon came back. There has been continuous knee pain now for about 4 months. The first doctor I went to took x-rays, and told me it was bursitis, and told me to go to 6 weeks of physical therapy. After those 6 weeks passed, the knee pain was worse. The PT referred me to another doctor, who had an MRI taken. The MRI showed a severe bone bruise. This doctor put me on crutches for 6 weeks and I was told not to swim anymore. The knee is not getting any better, and when I went back he gave me four more weeks on crutches. I am allowed to swim now. After getting back in the water, my knee pain has gotten worse and began to swell again. Does anybody have any ideas why it is doing this? I am in excruciating pain, and am going back in for an MRI, but do not know what else to do. Has anybody been in this same situation?

  • I have been in a similar situation. I am a teenager, and a competitive swimmer too! I injured my knee in October 2014 and now in March 2016, I still have horrible knee pain. I also had a bone bruise, diagnosed by x-rays, and I never had an mri or physical therapy. I was also on crutches and told not to swim. after getting off of my crutches, I was allowed to swim again but the pain was much worse. I wore a metal hinged brace for 6 months and it did absolutely nothing. my knee still swells sometimes and my mom says that we will go to the doctor soon. I realize this is almost three years later so did you ever figure the problem out? if you did, please respond. I hope the pain in your knee has gotten better. swim fast!
