im a 31yr old female have been suffering with calcium-oxilate kidney stone since i was 20 i was wondering if any other females out there noticed that they seemed to pass the kindey stones more often around the time you menstrate my doctor looks at me like im a fool when i ask what the connection between my period an passing a stone might be?you would think the fact that ive delt with this for 11yrs id notice that i more commonly pass a stone around the time or during my period......so if any other ladies out there are experiencing the same thing your input would be greatly appr. i would really like to get to the bottom of this.

  • Hi there, i am not quiet sure about the correlation between period and calcium oxalate (CoaX) since I know the reason for having calcium oxalate stone mainly because high oxalate level in urine with pH less than 6.0. Although there are 4 different condition which responsible for developing oxalate stone, like Hyperoxaluria, Hyperuricosuria, Hypercalciuria and Hypocitrauria.Since every condition also bring different background, i think u need to make a research lil' bit and comparing with ur situation.Hope this helps

  • Hi, I've only had one so far (hope none to follow) and I got it while I was on my period. I'm 24. Since I had one I thought it could be coincidence, but since there are more ladies out there with stones on their periods, I wonder.

  • For the past five months I have had kidney stone attacks and each time I have had my period. I brought this up to my urologist and he treated me as if I was crazy. I am so glad I am not the only woman who has noticed the connection!!!!!

  • I am going through that now!! It dawned on me a few months ago that I was getting 'kidney infections' during my period. Turns out, I have kidney stones and they seem to get aggravated during my period. I have actually passed a stone and it hurt so bad! I now have a rather large stone that will not pass on it's own. I read some where that eating watermelon helps dissolve the stone as well as making parsley tea. Has anyone tried that? I'm at my wits end with this one! Best of luck! Glad to know that I'm not alone!

I did not look this up myself yet, but if it helps, a friend of mine said he was reading a new idea of thought on the formation of kidney stones. He said they were testing the idea that rather than having an excess of something, your body has a lack of something, like calcium, and tries to extract it from your own body, kind of like leeching it from your bones. Obviously this is a very general summary of the study everyone, so no need to call me crazy either, just relaying what I heard, but it sounded like it made a lot more sense to me as far as the body being deficient in something, for instance during your period.Hope it helps

  • just adding a "me too" here. I just turned 32 and have passed 7 stones since I was 27. (2 small ones just in the last week) I didn't pick up on the timing until my 2nd trip to the Doctor, but mine too, have all come during my period. What made me realize this was when they (Dr's) ask if you have blood in urine, my answer was always "well its hard to say because I'm on my period". This is my first attempt at research on the subject...wish me luck! I'll post back if I find anything.

Only my first time having them (oct.14.2010)They delayed my period one day. The next period came the same time but didn't last as long. Now my period was supposed to happen yesterday and no period!!!I am on the pill and have been for 2 years for skin an later sexual activity. I take my pill religiously between the hours of 9am-noon usually always at about 930.I am sexually active but WHERE THE HECK IS MY PERIOD!!!?? I believe my kidney stones are the cause because I always take a pregnancy test every month (better to be safe than sorry) and they're always negative. Everyone thinks I'm crazy to link the stones to messing with my period but I'm going to a new doctor after the weekend.FRUSTRATING!!

  • Me too!!!!!!!I have had this happen to me twice in the last 6 months. I am 32, and confirmed that it was a kidney stone passing since the firs time I got a CT scan and the second time my doc and I recognized the symptoms. Both kidney stone passing were on the second day of my period. My doc too does not seem to want to acknowledge that there might be a connection between both.

  • I have this same problem, and have been suffering with it for a few years. I am 45. I started having the problem after I turned 40. When I am on my period I have serious kidney, side, and pelvic pain. I have gone to the doctor, and the hospital with this issue several times. They always make me feel like they think I'm crazy, or stupid. I am so happy to know that I am not the only one with this problem. I wish someone had the answer to this very painful problem. I am on my second day of very serious pain right now. I actually think I passed a stone at work today. Right now I am able to lean back and let my back touch the couch without it killing me.

  • I am 43 and have now had four kidney stones since I gave birth to my second child 8 years ago. Each time, I have had my period, and although I thought it was a strange coincidence, it didn't occur to me to look up a connection until now! I am going for a CAT scan tomorrow and to see the urologist to make sure my current, horrible, pain is really a stone, but my symptoms are the same as the past times. If one of my doctors has an answer, I will be happy to post again!!

  • I also wanted to add a me too. Im 19 years old and I'm on my 6th Kidney stone; one every month since October and it is like clock work just like a period. I get a kidney stone and an infection 6 days before I start every period. It is getting very aggravating because the doctors at my college act like I'm crazy.

  • Add me to the list! I had a kidney stone five years ago during my period. Recently I ended up in the ER with a 3mm kidney stone during my period....three months later another and right now another. This is crazy. I have been trying to drink a lot of liquids and especially water with lemon as I have heard it dissolves them.

  • I am 33 and have been having same problems. My Obgyn thinks it may be related due to the swelling or enlarging of the urethra during the period. She said it would give cause for the stones to move around b/c there was a larger opening for them to go through. I know this not a problem solver as I am up not experiencing mild discomfort in my back and front side. My stones are felt more on my right side than the left and I've had two surgeries in my right. Hope this might help some, but I'm still looking for answers :)

  • I also have to add to the ME TOO list! I have had 2 kidney stones and BOTH OF THEM were passed during my period on the SECOND DAY!!! I'm in my late 40's and have given birth naturally to 2 children and 2 kidney stones (THEY WERE EQUALLY AS PAINFUL!!)To those of you who mentioned "drinking lemonade" or citric juices "so the stones get dissolved" BE WARNED that the citrus will actually cause the stone to move and EVEN MORE PAIN. STAY AWAY FROM CITRIC JUICES, especially GRAPEFRUIT!!!I believe it's NO COINCIDENCE that all of us here in this forum have passed our kidney stones during our periods and especially in the beginning of it. By the way, try to AVOID adding SALT to your meals. SALT IS THE VILLAIN THAT CAUSES KIDNEY STONES!!!The first time I ended up in the hospital because the pain was unbearable and the second time I had no money nor insurance to go to the hospital but it was a great agony as well until I finally passed it.I hope doctors would take more notice of this "coincidence!"

  • I'm glad I found this, please add me to the list. For the last year I thought I was going nuts. My kidney stones started about 5yrs ago. I am 31. For 6 months maybe more? they spike around my period. So I take a home remedy that I found. 1/4 cup lemon juice(best fresh), 1/4 extra virgin olive oil. Mix well. Makes about three shots. Take one shot, drink a glass of water over 15 mins. Repeat until mix is gone. You wait the fifteen mins because the mix is heavy and you will feel like throwing up. Do on an empty stomach. The lemon helps break down the stones then the oil liberates them. I have only ever passed one stone that I know of for sure. But the pain goes away and I feel fine.
