  • Jennyanne - this is not a life threatening condition. I think it was not explained correctly to you. Your diaphragm is a flat muscle just below the bottom of your lungs. When the muscle contracts and relaxes, it helps push air in and out of your lungs. There is an opening in the diaphragm for the esophagus. The esophagus lets food go down your throat and then down to your stomach. With a hiatal hernia, a little part of the esophagus moves too much. These cannot strangle you. Perhaps an anatomy book could help you see this if it has a good illustration. Some chiropractors can help this. You may want to ask friends and relatives if they know of one who can. I am a chiro and do work on these types of problems.
