heart rate can not go very high without chest pain

I am 59 and used to be in rather fantastic shape - non smoker - some beer drinking - lactose intolerant so no dairy products

I have no symptoms unless I ride my recumbant stationary cycle

Up to about 2 months ago I was fine and could get my heart rate up to 130-140 with ease no pain - I could even hit 165 if I wanted without pain but almost never did

Suddenly as I start and maintain 115 for 5 minutes (at a mild 3 bar resistance setting) I will have to go down to rediculously low 2 bars (and lower my cadence) or the high chest pain (evenly across chest above heart) is too great

Breathing deeply helps

Same thing happens if I walk up hill for 5 minutes

Otherwise I have absolutely no other symptoms (humorously I could just stop exercising and cure myself)

Since I have no other symptoms it is not really possible to narrow this down - But I am thinking it could be amemia (iron deficiency) - potassium deficiency - but my diet has not changed

Does something special happen at age 59?

  • Even though you seem to be "all health", I would still advise you to see a cardiologist. Good luck!
