I'm a 24 year old male who's been having "Flank" pain (in the lower back where your kidney's sit) and excruitating headaches for going on one year now. I've had so many tests done but they find nothing wrong with my kidney's. They say the headaches are "cluster headaches" and are treating me with a variety of migraine types of drugs. I've had ultra sounds, MRI's, cat scan's, X-Rays, and a variety of blood tests. They say everything is normal. I really believe that this is all related to something going on with my kidney's - but I just don't know what tests to even ask the doctor to do anymore. My symptoms are intense "flank/kidney pain" both sides throb constantly and I have very painful abdominal cramps- accompanied by diarreaha, then constipation. My urine always looks cloudy - but I've had numerous tests on my urine and they always says it's normal. I'm also always fatigued / tired / feel run-down but can't get more than a few hours of good sleep each night. The doctors don't look at the whole picture - they come in the room for maybe 2 minutes and order another test - which you have to wait weeks to go to then weeks to hear the resuts. All this time I'm suffering and am so sick of life. I desperately need a doctor who will help me and not say it's all "psychological"! I know my body and something is wrong with me. Someone, please help me.

If you are taking this medication read up on its side effects.

  • what kind of drugs are you taking for your headaces? If one of them is Topamax you need to drink alot of water, they can cause you to have kidney stones. This drug also has alot side affects, if you are taking a high dose you may ask your if taking a lower dose would releive some of the effects this drug can give you. Read up all your drugs and see, maybe they are causing unecessary problems your having with your body.I'm a 24 year old male who's been having "Flank" pain (in the lower back where your kidney's sit) and excruitating headaches for going on one year now. Over the last year I have had pain in my lower right flank and back, and know I have stones. I am going for my second operation this month. Topamax is a big causer of kidney stones

  • hi there, my name is stacey, and i have been having excactly the same symptoms as you have been having. i have been like this for about 4 years now, (i am 27 just turned) i have bad kidney pain, some times i feel like i am dying, i just feel so ill, and just a week ago the pain started getting very bad (stabbing pain) i have cloudy urine, and everytime the doctors (4 now) have tested my urine, there is always blood, but they keep telling me there is no infection. i have been sent to bowel doctors, reumatologists (sorry bout spelling) urologists even, ( many many tests all normal)and no one has helped me. i cant function properly, i feel so fetigued and drained, and about 1 year ago i had to leave work. you are the only one i have found on the web that sounds like my case. ( by the way its not in our heads) a person knows when they feel pain. I mean i am a very happy person, satisfied with life, involved in a great christian church, just you know, im crusin, lovin life, and when a doctor looks at you with disbelief, its like, i wish they would just , (anyway i could go on and on) anyway, i hope that you get your problem sorted out, and if you do, could you do me a favour, and let me know . and vise versa. have a great nite ok, and you will find your answer one day.stace( sorry bout the rush writing this) melcey@yahoo.com

  • i too have the same problems. they thought is was my gallbladder so they took that out, it was fine, and that was not the issue. i have also had like every test done out there and always get the same answer "everything looks fine". it's so frustrating because people sometimes treat me as if its in my head, or that its not that bad and can just take some tylenol and itll go away. No, thats not the case either, because i have taken a serious of medication ranging from Vicodin, to Percocet, to Valium and nothing works. the doctors also found blood in my urine, and its always high amounts of it. i was being diagnosed with UTI's/bladder infections for the longest time (5 within 4 months) and that was clearly not the issue, but they kept telling me it was anyways. I also went to see a urologist and he didn't even know what to do. they did a cystoscopy and that came back fine, although since ive had the test i have now had bladder issues. i think its due to something that the doc did bc it wasn't suppose to hurt and when he did the test i screamed at the top of my lungs.....but somehow it came back normal. i had to quit my job, and am still jobless and can't pay for any bills. im only 20 (just turned) and have had these symptoms since the beginning of last year. so if anyone gets a doctor who cares, and looks further in depth and finds anything or thinks it could be something....please please let me know. i am down to telling my doctor what I think it could be, because they're all at a dead end. Thanks.

  • Hi, can definately sympathise with this pain. 5 weeks ago I started getting urinary tract infections. Everytime I went on anti-biotics the infection came back days after completing the course. I also had blood in my urine. My doctor decided to look into it further as the anti-biotics did little to help. I have had horrible pains in my lower abdomen and lower back. I have been feeling fatigued, nauseas, and have had terrible headaches. The only way I have been surviving is by living my life under the effect of panadeine forte. I will be having a CT scan today, my doctor thinks that it is most probably kidney stones. This would explain repeated infection and pain but it does not explain the various other symptoms (headaches, dizziness, shakes and generally just feeling extremely ill). Even when the bladder infection clears up, and my urine returns to normal I still have these symptoms. I haven't been able to work. Anytime I engage in any kind of activity at home (even duties such as doing the dishes) I feel nauseas , faint and shakey. I am only 20 and I haven't had any major health problems in the past. My family are generally very healthy, and nobody in my close or extended family have had anything like this. I am suprised to hear that there are so many people suffering from the same symptoms, and not getting any answers!

  • See, i only really had 1 bladder infection when they kept telling me that i had them. And the only one that i had, i knew i had it thats why i went to the doctors. The other times i went was for the pain on my side, to see if they could give me meds or do something about it. They just kept telling met that i had bladder infections. After the third time of this happening, i stopped taking the antibiotics that they were giving me because i knew they wouldn't help anything. I am always tired also. I could sleep for 6-9 hours at night, doesn't make a difference, and im still always tired. Ive had a CT done like two or three times and they come back fine. And im still jobless, right now only due to the fact that the economy sucks....but i have to have a sit down job of some sort because the pain gets so bad whenever i do anything. My pain gets so bad to where it also feels like im goin to faint...it just knocks the wind out of me. Only thing that helps is just to sit or lay down right away. But, let me know how your test goes. Im curious to see what your doctors say. If it is kidney stones or something else. (they keep telling me my kidneys are fine...and ive had my gall bladder removed so it sure aint' gall stones) I finally have an appointment with an internal medicine doctor february 5th. I should have been sent there like 8 months ago...but again, i go to the base doctors and they don't seem to know much at all. Hope your test goes well, but also hope you find some sort of answers.

  • Boy, I know what you guys are feeling. I was just running around the web looking up information on topamax. For years they told me my stomach aches were nothing, that I was just faking. And when my back started hurting me it was just my muscles I needed to excersize.Recently I had a migrane that as Kaiser likes to list it as took out my eye sight in my right eye temperarly, ignoring the image from my eye doctor which showed a bubble in my eye. (that now has gone unknown what it was but is linked to my diagnosis)LONG story short, MIGRAINES, STOMACH ACHES, BACK ACHES, all those were related. (So could also strokes, heart problems and other scary things that can kill you) Ultra sounds showed nothing. And once I was diagnosed very few doctors recognized the disease. I have Polycystic Kidney DiseaseStill not getting treated for it. But I'm just saying, some of you might have it and not know it. You may have gotten MRI's ultra sounds, and all that, but if a person is not familiar with the disease in it's lesser form (which is still painful as (censor) they'll fail to notice it.Doctors are IDIOTS, and if you don't go there screaming and kicking, there just going to blow you off. It took, surprisingly my dead beat mom who saw something weird on the ultra sound that the doctor didn't that got me on the path to a diagnosis.I know I am a hypocrite for saying this, but just by giving up and agreeing with a doctor that says I don't know is not the way to go. Look him in the eye and civilly say -censored- you, I am finding a doctor that has an education then. I thought a doctor cracker jack box doctors diploma would save me but I guess not. Now I'm going to find someone with a REAL degree from a REAL college.

  • It's normal, but with what I have it can be abnormal (usually is). And with me they have done so many tests :: holds head :: My god I have lost track. Most come back normal Funny thing is my kidney fuction is VERY good one doctor was amused by that. Heh. That's as far as I was let in on anything. So yay I feel like crap day in day out, my tests come back normal time and time again. All I know if they did from A to Z and back agian. Vampires I tell you... I don't suggest this, but how I make myself feel better is cut back on the protein. (I go veg no nuts for a week and OOO do I feel good) That makes A LOT of the pain go away. I was just thinking about it. That and not taking any pain meds, pain meds actually seem to irritate them.RMD82

  • Just like me! Same symptoms. Maybe this is useful. I went to the clinic because the kidneys pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, (no infection), everything was ok, but my doctor surprising found "Helicobacter Pylori" infection (blood test positive). I'm under treatment and I feel really better (no fatigue!). This bacteria was just discovered in 1982 so it's something new. I'm seriously thinking that also affects kidneys and nobody (investigators and doctors) noticed it yet!Check that... Maybe this is your answer.doracast@hotmail.com

  • Hi there...I feel so horrible that so many have/are experiencing the same pain and frustration I have been over the last 14 months. I began to notice something wasn't right with my body Dec '08. I initially thought I had a UTI and began taking cranberry extract pills to hopefully spare a trip to the doctors. After 2 weeks and no relief I began seeing my PCP trying to figure out where all the pain was coming from and why all of the sudden. As with most of you, I was told no UTI, nothings wrong etc. I demanded for 4 months something be done and was finally referred to Ultrasound and CT Scans. Upon return of my test results I was told that my (R) kidney had some scarring but the pain was due to ovarian cysts. I continued to demand week after week that this clearly was not the issue due to the consistant flank pain only on the (R) back side. My PCP finally consulted with a Urologist who suggested other tests. Upon results of the new tests I found out that my (R) kidney is 1/3 the size of a normal kidney, that is is badly damaged due to chronic kidney infections and that I have kidney reflux. I was finally referred to a Urologist. My urologist believed I had a condition called Interstitial Cystitis, which is a non-curable bladder disease. After tests and hydrodistension I was finally diagnosed and treated for this disease. According to statistics it typically takes a person 4-7 years to be diagnosed with this disease. 90% of people diagnosed are women but men have been diagnosed too. I would suggest to those of you having any type of bladder pain with no UTI's and especially blood in the urine to ask about IC. (www.ic-network.com) Also, ask for a Voiding cystourethrogram, you may have kidney reflux. This is where the ureters push urine back up to the kidney's and causes pressure.I will report that after my diagnosis of IC and being treated and maintaining my newly restricted diet with that the pain in the bladder has decreased. In regards to my reflux I had a bulking agent procedure and it has proven to be unsuccessful as I am still in just as much flank pain as I was before. :c(As my PCP told me today, unless he hears from me often he doesn't know I am suffering. So, take mine and his advise and ride your physician like a collections agency who wants paid!Good Luck!

  • Hi, I had similar story to you and every time my cloudy urine was tested the result would be negative for infection. To cut my very long story short I found that cutting out milk and milk products from my diet and taking vitamin B12 sublingual has helped me a great deal. I have more energy no more symptoms of infection.... unless I eat or drink milk products. I hope this helps.

  • I am a 29 year old woman with the same issues! Any diagnoses yet? Mine comes in waves, sometimes it's tolerable and the wrest of the time I feel like I'm dying. I run fever sometimes too, like I am now :( I feel horrible and am getting no releaf. My family is worried and truthfully I am too. I hate this, my family means so much to me and I can't function when these things come on. Even now my hands are starting to tingle which is something new. My headaches are daily now and this is really starting to get more and more frequent and worse. I'm out of money and have no insurance so all testing has stopped. Please pass along any info you get! Thank you all for speaking out, I was starting to think it was only me. Praying for all of you!Amanda

Someone, please help me. I have the exact same problem. Mine has been going on for several years now. I was told I get reoccurring kidney infections. I cannot even drink caffeine or go a day without taking my cranberry supplements to avoid an infection. I got one when I was 22 weeks pregnant and had to be hospitalized because there is a risk of preterm labor. Right now I have one and have the same awful headache I always get. Drinking pure cranberry (just cranberry, no sugar) juice helps but if my pain doesn't go away after doing that for a day, then I always have to get on antibiotics to get rid of it. Which sucks but it's better than failing kidneys. Good Luck to you!
