Failure to diagnose enlarged heart

My boyfriend's mother just died suddenly from an enlarged heart. The medical condition was never detected on her medical record but she had previously visited the hospital for unrelated conditions. My guess is that excessive drinking caused the enlarged heart but why hadn't the doctors picked up on it and treated it? Could this have been prevented with simple detection and medicine? They are looking to take legal action, do they have a case?

  • I am so sorry that this has happened... Many times an enlarged heart is caused by High Blood pressure... and there are good reasons why this condition is called the "Silent Killer". Be prepared for a legal battle if they wish to sue for medical negligence... if she had a problem with drinking the Dr's will place all the blame on that and her... it is cruel and it can be very unfair, but that is the path they will take. I would suggest that a little time is taken to go through the mourning process... give yourselves time to heal and take care of yourselves... there are statute of limitations, but they give people time to get over the initial shock of these circumstances and to try to approach this with a more emotional level playing feild. (The hard fact is that emotions are a hinderance in court and often keep a jury or Judge from focussing on the true issues) Again, my condolances...
