Doctor using Q-Tips in my ear! (?)

I was at the doctor today, and first he took a "lookingdevice" with a plastic protection cover to look down my ear. He poked it quite far down and wondered if it hurt when he did so..It sure did!

Then suddenly he said, I'm gonna clean out some wax. He then proceeded to take 3 q-tips in a row and put them down my ear, and the third one came out with blood on it. I was a bit shocked....does this sound like common practice? He actually admitted that he had caused the ear to bleed, but acted as if it didn't matter.

  • What's the follow-up? Are you feeling better now?

  • Yeah-This is not a good thing. I am not a doctor, only a nurse. I do know that it is common practice to utilize an otoscope to check the ears but it is not common practice to actually stick it into the ear canal. Q-tips are supposed to be used to clean the outer part of the ear canal and outer ear, a warm wash cloth, and/or warm water rinse is more appropriate to clean out or debride any excessive ear wax. I would definitely address this with your physician. It is really important for patients to remember that just because doctors went to medical school does not mean they are god. They do make mistakes and they do make them often. It is so important for patients to advocate for themselves becuase if we don't noone else will. If you still have any loss of hearing or bleeding I would ask for a referral to an ear nose and throat specialist and tell them what happened. Better yet, if your insurance does not require any referals, make the appoinment yourself! Good luck with everything and let us all know what happens.

  • Q-tips are useless in cleaning out an ear. They only pack it in futher. There is a little scoop like an ice cream scoop that is used or a loop like a wire look for a petry dish that is used. Most of the time with warm water irrigation. Don't do it yourself unless you are just using an irrigation kit OTC. Hold off on that until you get it checked again. Bloody q tip could be many things but someone should take another look to see if he perforated your ear drum. Might get worse get it checked out again by a different doctor to be fair.
