Who has been thru this? My spouse, a child of 13 lost his mother when he was 9 to ?stomach cancer. Roughly in his late 30's he had signs of bleeing in stool. Went to check out and was told that he had some polyps, nothing to worry about and one may of started bleeding, (yes he had colonoscopy done). Bleeding would come and go, with no pain. Few years later in mid 40's, new dr. another colonoscopy, they removed polyps, no signs of cancer. Late 40's he had another colonoscopy, again more polyps removed. Then a couple years ago, we had to rush to hospital, put him on morphine, he was having problems urinating and felt like he had gas when he urinated. bloating, stomach pains, they put him on antibiotics, sent him home and scheduled another colonoscopy. We changed dr.s and he recommended surgen to do the procedure. The surgen diagnosed diverticular, his entire colon has pouches, he had a severe pelvic infection, Surgeon came to me in waiting area, first I was told he had diverticular, removed 3 large polyps, (precancerous stage). Nurse in recovery informed me and showed me xray of colon, and the dr. had viewed his whole colon, and showed pockets clearly thru out, not just a small ssection. We were informed that my spouse will need surgery, a matter of "NOT IF" but "When". Since, he has had obvious bowel changes from runny to hard stools. Blood in stool even more often.
I need to know, as a wife, has anyone gone thru this? What do I need to prepare myself for in the long run. I am accepting that his health will only worsen. I suspect no surgery is scheduled, because there is no good section of the colon to re-connect? Surgeon did say it will be an emergency operation, I am only trying to read and inform and educate myself to prepare for what is in the future. My husband is early 50's. The surgeon told me in waiting room that diverticular should of been noticed on the previous colonoscopies. Meanwhile, I have seen my husband become weaker, fatique easy. We both grew up farm kids, hard workers, but I can load feed and hay and handle heavy stuff and last longer than he can. I can always tell when he is going to have a flare up...he has a body odor.....fecal toxic smell.
Thank you and please don't be afraid to tell me the worse
