Diagnosed with HSV-2 after trip to Asia

I make frequent trips to Asia for business. It's been a part of my job since 1997. I am happily married, and have been faithful to my wife since meeting her twelve years ago. I have never been with a *********e or have ever been diagnosed with any type of STD.

Recently, upon my recent return from a trip to Asia, I found blisters/pimples on my penis. I went to the doctor to have it checked out. He said it looked like herpes and then took a culture sample to have it tested. To my surprise, the results came back positive for HSV-2. The doctor explained that I could have had this for years and didn't know it. He said I could've gotten it before I met my wife twelve years ago and didn't know it.

I'm now having to explain to my wife why the results are positive. She now suspects that I've been unfaithful because reports on the web say that outbreaks occur within days after infection. She says that she's been tested routinely for diseases like this in each of her pregnancies. Although I can't rule it out, I don't believe that I got it from my wife. If I got it, I got it from a past relationship more than twelve years ago, in which the person I was with had many partners and used drugs frequently.

I'm seeking help to find some medical data that can help me explain this to save my marriage and family. My wife is trying to stay strong through this but don't know how long she will last. Meanwhile, I'm being asked to take another trip to Asia.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

  • I'm sorry for your troubles. HSV-2 is not only passed through sexual contact. The following url should help you. Show it to your wife & let her that you are actively looking for an explaination to what has happen....this may help a little.http://www.dentistry.leeds.ac.uk/oralpath/viruses/viral%20infections/HSV.htmI am surprised that your Doctor did not offer to see both yourself & your wife jointly to explain the situation fully & offer treatment. Maybe you should ask him/her to.

  • Thanks for your help and support. Do you know of any other sites that would help to explain how lesion outbreaks could occur even after many years? Most of what I've read shows that lesions occur within days of being infected. I am a living statistic that knows this is not true.

  • I've had Chronic HSV-2 for over 20 years and I almost certainly,as I was advised by my physician, contracted it sexually. If you got it from other than a sexual source,it is unknown to me,I'm sorry to say. However, having said this, remember that it can lay dormant for years in the base of the spine where it sleeps like snake. It will awaken according to it's own inclination and can not be predicted.Yes,you could have contracted it before you knew your wife so she need not doubt your fidelity. One last point,Herpes Simplex is anything but a simple virus and will adapt and evolve in its host environment and recreates itself accordingly.Best wishes,R.

  • Thanks, Roberttt. I appreciate your feedback. Are there any other STDs can lay dormant for that long as well?

  • Hi, I too have recently shown symptoms of a HSV2 infection.I have no idea when I contracted the disease though - I've been with my wife for more than 13 years. I did make a "mistake" over 18 months ago (which my wife is aware of). So, if it turns out that I have HSV2 there's no telling when I contracted it.Interestingly, about 6 weeks before my symptoms showed, I went to Asia on a business trip. I was not even remotely involved with anyone while I was there (sexually speaking) - I find this an interesting connection though.Roberttt..... I am interested though. When you say you've had chronic HSV2 for 20 years - can you define what chronic is?
