In October of 2009 I started to have cold like symptoms. Over a two week time frame they got much worse and it was obvious I did not have a cold. I went to the emergency room in Ellsworth Maine with swelling in my entire face, neck, hands.I also had severe back pain. I was diagnosed with bronchitis without an x-ray and sent home. The swelling continued, the pain got so bad I could not lay down. My neck and chest were purple from broken blood vessels. Again I went to the same er. Maine is very rural and hospitals are a long drive from where I live so I went to the same Ellsworth hospital. This time I was diagnosed with sinus infection, given antibiotics and sent home. This was after they saw that I had been in a few days before and told to come back for a chest x-ray if it did not get better. The swelling in my face was so bad my eyes were all but swollen shut. Things continued to get worse. My heartbeat became irregular, I started having pressure in my head that would almost make me faint, the swelling in my face and neck was huge, and the pain in my upper spine was unbelievable. This time I drove to Bangor to EMMC and was immediatley taken in and given a chest x-ray and blood work. The x-ray showed a huge mass in my left lung. The cancer had also moved to my liver, lymph nodes and bone, which was what was causing the back pain. I was admitted to the hospital and started chemo right away. My prognosis isn't good because the cancer was already a stage 4 when I was diagnosed. Please, if you are ill and you can possibly do it, get a second opnion, it is worth it. I guess I was raised to believe that doctors are always right, or most of the time at least. But we really have to be managers of our own health care. I had no health insurance at the time and that may have had a lot to do with it also. Take care everyone, and don't settle for an opnion that you think is wrong, trust your intuition.
