I broke my jaw a month ago. A Mandibular fracture. I had 2 fractures one on my left side and the other on my chin. Last week the doctors took xrays and noticed that it wasnt healing in the right position. So they had to redo the whole operation and im in agony. Another month of these wires and no food. Towards the end of that 4th week i was having excrutiating pain in my face. I thought it was an ear infection because it was in that region. But lets start with the symptoms that im experiencing since the second try at this surgery. They placed a splint with screws in the mandible to try and get a good connection again and wired my teeth together. This was on friday 3/21. Since then most of the swelling has gone away but im having some other complications. Everytime i get ready to fall asleep im awakened by a sharp pain in my left cheek by my ear. It really hurts alot. and then i have a hard time getting back to sleep. does this have anything to do with maybe grinding my teeth or something to do with how the injury is healing. I dont know what to do because im scared to fall asleep. im a 22 yr old male and in good health. i cant wait to get back to normal but honestly im losing hope. Ive spent 4 weeks wired up just to find out it wasnt healing right and now im having a hard time again. I cant sleep. Can someone offer any information? Please

  • My answers in red !I broke my jaw a month ago.Aaaah No ! U didn't really want to do that now did u ! 1 A Mandibular fracture. I had 2 fractures one on my left side and the other on my chin. Last week the doctors took xrays and noticed that it wasnt healing in the right position.ahh not so nice ! So they had to redo the whole operation and im in agony. Another month of these wires and no food. Towards the end of that 4th week i was having excrutiating pain in my face. This damage to ur jaw could have damaged ur trigeminal nerve ! I thought it was an ear infection because it was in that region. But lets start with the symptoms that im experiencing since the second try at this surgery. They placed a splint with screws in the mandible to try and get a good connection again and wired my teeth together.Really do feel for u ! This was on friday 3/21. Since then most of the swelling has gone away but im having some other complications. Everytime i get ready to fall asleep im awakened by a sharp pain in my left cheek by my ear. It really hurts alot.I do know what u mean, i have TN (trigeminal neuralgia) and then i have a hard time getting back to sleep. Impossible to sleep with it !does this have anything to do with maybe grinding my teeth Grinding teeth will certainly not help it ! a bite guard would help with that !or something to do with how the injury is healing.probably ! I dont know what to do because im scared to fall asleep.I can relate to that ! im a 22 yr old male and in good health. This is due to nerve damage due to trauma ! i cant wait to get back to normal Me too !but honestly im losing hope. Plz don't loose hope ! Ive spent 4 weeks wired up just to find out it wasnt healing right It is so frustrating !and now im having a hard time again.Hopefully i can help u a bit ! I cant sleep. Can someone offer any information? Please First of all, I totally sympathize with what ur going through. Unfortunately the Trigeminal Nerve is in the area that u describe the pain, ur injury has most likely damaged it or it has caused inflamation on it or around it ! Unfortunately again, nerve damage is one of the most difficult to treat. Grinding ur teeth will be making matters worse, a bite guard should help with this. Drugs that u may find that will help u are 1. Baclofen......it is a muscle relaxent & stops spasms or helps with them ! Also Amitriptyline, it is an anti-depressant but it also helps cronic pain, & pain to this area for some ! These 2 drugs are what i take although still not a cure but they help a bit ! They offer all kinds of treatment eg Tegrotol, its an epileptic drug, they use this to try & block the pain signals going to ur brain or from brain, i cant remember which. There are many more drugs they use, eg Gabapintin/Neurontin & many more...just cant remember them all now........i did not do at all well on these drugs, may work for some but not me. Things u need to do now......Go back to doctor & decuss this with him, hopefully he will try the Baclofen first. Also go to dentist regarding bite guard, then again if ur jaw is wired up this might have to wait.......look into it anyway. I hope this is of some help to you......plz let me know how u are getting on ! .....also if there is anything u want to ask me, feel free ! Hope things improve for you sooner rather than later ! :)hugs ! another thing i meant to say is......try accupunture.....it can really help alot also !
