I was shot 5 times by armed robbers in our house last year. One of the bullets went through my chest resulting in my left lung collapsing. After 2weeks in ICU I could breath on my own again. Unfortunately, one of the other bullets also went through my spinal cord. At the age of 19 I became a T12/L1 paraplegic. The docters said I had a 30% chance of ever walking again. However, I refuse to be a girl confined to a wheelchair!
After 10 months of extensive rehab and fisio I can walk 600m a day with crutches and callipers/braces. I still spend most of my time in the wheelchair, but I have partial feeling and good muscle control in my left leg, it can support my whole body’s weight on it’s own. I am waiting for my right leg...
I will walk again. Normal and unassisted.
I believe Stem Cell research or Nano technology will find a cure for Spinal Cord Injuries. Lets just hope it will be in my lifetime...
