A simple stomach infection?

I'm 35 and male. For the last few weeks I have been getting dark red blood and a mucus type substance in my stools. I also had the constant urge to go to have a bowel motion. I then developed quite sore stomach pains and the bowel motions increased to 5-6 times a day. I went to the doctor and he ran some blood and stool tests. The results came back and the doctor says I have a stomach infection and precribed Amoxicilllin (500mg/3 per day), Metronidazole (400mg/3 per day) and Omeprazole (20mg/2 per day). The doctor has also said that there was blood in my stool sample and wants me to have rectal exam later this week. He wouldn't share his theories about diagnosis but the blood in the stools worries me.

Can anyone shed any light on what might be wrong with me?
