Told I had hemmoroids

I've been living with ulcerative colitis for 18 years. In September 2001 I entered into a study to help my colitis. While undergoing weekly visits to one of the best doctors of the East coast I was experiencing severe pain in my right butt cheek along with clear drainage. I repeatedly told the doctor. She insisted I had internal hemmoroids!! I told her my very uncomfortable symptoms once a week and she told me to "live with it" due to the fact that I had ulcerative colitis. I knew they weren't hemmoroids. After 14 years of a disease you learn your body very well. However, due to the fact that she was the "best" I took her word for it. Plus, she too, was sending me to colleagues to seek their opinion about the drainage. He too, had no clue. Not once did anyone suggest a CATSCAN.
Long story short, six months later the pain crippled me and I was rushed to the hospital for emergency. I had an abscess wrapped around my rectum the size of a grapefruit. I am 5' 3" and 105 pounds, it was a bit painful!!!
They (not my current doc) drained it and I thought my problems were over.,.. little did I know her misdiagnosis led me to a world I never knew! Fistualas and soiled underwear and pain that would never go away because of where it is located (under my coxsic can't spell it bone) GREAT!!! I'm 33, newly married, have puss leaking out of my butt and want to have a baby but don't know how I'm going to manage!!! I need help, I need a miracle, my body can't take any more antibiotics that don't help anyway.......if there is anyone out there that can help or ease my mind I'd appreciate it. :(

  • i knew someone who had frequent abscesses and they had the gland removed. he had to be out of work for four to six weeks(that's what the dr. told him was the length of post op care. why couldn't they do the same for you? i hope things get better but keep searching for an answer you're too young to live that way.

  • I'd do anything to get rid of it. They all claim they don't want to go in and tackle it due to where it is located. I need a name of a good colon rectal surgeon. If anyone out there knows anyone that can help.....please.

  • My husband had a peri-anal fistula several years ago. He has Crohn's Disease. He'd had surgery on it twice, was told various things to help with it, but nothing really helped. This went on for about three years. He had his first treatment with Remicade to help get the Crohn's under control. After his second treatment, the fistula went away entirely. Remicade is now commonly used to treat Crohn's disease and it is especially helpful in healing fistulas. Ask your doctor about it. It's an infusion that takes a couple of hours and there are some serious potential side effects, but everyone I know that's on it say the risks are well worth the rewards. Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice. I unfortunately have tried Remicade. I'm alergic to it. I was in the hospital for three days, ten days after it was administered to me with a serum sickness caused by the Remicade. I've heard wonderful things about Remicade but it's not for me. I wish something else would work for me. Thanks.:)

  • You might want to ask your GI about trying Humera. It's the same class of drug as Remicade, but it's built on human genes instead of mouse genes. As you might guess, people are less likely to have an allergic reaction to something using human genes. Right now, it's licensed for rheumatoid arthritis and it's ilk and it would be an off label use because it hasn't been expressly approved for IBD use. Unless your insurance company is entirely evil, your doc should be able to get you approved. It's worth looking in to, anyway. I can totally understand that you might not want to take the risk of another reaction. I'm certainly not a doctor and I only know what I've heard when my husband is getting Remicade - the nurse frequently talks about Humera, actually, and how she hopes it's approved soon for Crohn's patients.

  • Chinese medicine is very helpful for colitis and intestinal abscesses. Please find a qualified practitioner who specializes in Chinese herbal medicine. Please give this a try as so many Western meds are toxic and cause many more side effects. I had pseudomembraneous colitis directly due to taking clindamyacin. Thought I was going to die. Went to my acupuncturist and took 10 days of (nasty tasting) herbs and all of my symptoms were gone...this works. I now take a good quality probiotic every day to keep myself in balance. To help with hemorrhoids I also insert a probiotic into the rectum each night. I have successfully treated many patients with chronic diarrhea symptoms and other GI problems. When Western medicine has few and inferior options, you can choose a different path of treatment. To find a practitioner near you, log on to www.acufinder.com and type in your zip code. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.DOM

  • Bugdog, I am very aware of Humira and am currently trying to decide whether or not to enter into the Clinical trial. I'm also waiting on my 3rd or 4th opinion doctors appointment which is Feb. 8th. I really want to get pregnant and I'm hesitant to take the Humira because of it. No one has told me to "not get pregnant". Actually, my Gastro Dr. is very for it. He claims I'll be able to manage, but I worry about the baby. HOpefully, within the next few weeks I will figure it out. I'm also currently seeing a pain management Dr. who preformed acupuncture. I'm thinking of switching over to someone who specializes in Chinese medications and gastrointestinal disorders. So much going on all the time, I need a break. Thanks for the ongoing responses. Please feel free to comment. Thanks again.:)

  • Well, do to the recent postings concerning my advice, I feel the need to stress that this is just a forum and I am not offering you cures for your disease. I am only suggesting that acupuncture and Oriental Medicine could be helpful in alleviating your symptoms and promoting healing. An Oriental Medical practitioner will look at all of your signs and symptoms and will come up with a treatment plan that is appropriate for you. The herbs I specifically took may or may not help you as Chinese herbs treat the person, not the specific disease. Does that make sense? Wishing you the best of luck.DOM

  • For the love of god please go see a real doctor. Do not listen to these internet doctors. As a student I come here because I want to go to med school and figure I'll get a jump start. I have recently read about a girl that acuann and shula have given the usual acupuncture/herbal meds cures all routine. This poor soul is no longer with us and her poor family is currently trying to put acuann and shula in jail. I honestly can't believe they still want to play doctor on the internet after what they have done. On a side note, I also go to burningman and their website. After a serious injury at the event lawyers went to the web forum to get information to be used in court. I imagine this will also happen here in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised if they used the search feature and copied every one of acuanns posts. With a court summons or warrant I am sure they could find out where she lives to arrest her.
