I've seen a message from you forum dated from 2008 of a misdiagnosis of autism.
It also happenend to us, but contrary to the person who posted the message in 2008, the misdiagnosis of autism of my son was not made by a child psychiatrist, but by a director of a daycare center and it was taken seriously by professionnals... our life became ****.
It hapenned when my son was 5 years old. One day, a director of a kindergarten decided that he had autism. She did everything to prove it, abuse, provocations, excitements... especially the day of observation...
It happened in Canada... We were a little family with no problems... one day, my son started with anxiety in a daycare center. He was diagnosed with autism with no test just feelings and impressions by a director of a daycare center. Thy did everything to influence the two professionnals who observerd my son. The first received a report which mentionned autism in some words any parents who are not familiar to it could not understand. For the second professionnal, they organized something like a theathrical play, they prepared my son with abuse, provocations, excitements to prove he had autism.
We got the report of the psychologist saying that he did not like to approach friends from the same age, he aligned toys, he could not held a conversation... We did not believe in it because we have never seen our son aligning toys at home and he is very good at speaking. We were right.
Of course, we did not believe in them because my child loved talking, playing with other kids and had many interests in life.
My child was abused... each daycare center receive money for each child diagnosed as autist...
Fortunately, we had a double nationality, my son is not autist; he met competent doctors in Europe and he is far from being autistic.
He is very clever and he has some coordination problems.
It cost us 50 000 dollars...22 months after, we are still wondering how a director of a daycare center can make diagnosis, how she could influence other professionnals, how she could communicate her conclusions to the school who believed her without any test... and without meeting any doctor. The money that could receive the daycare center can be an explanation... I have no others.
My son cannot go to school to this province of Canada (Quebec) without being considered as an autist because they left commentaries in his school records. My son developped something like a phobia since this event... his life will never be the same again. I tried to complain, nobody is punished yet... pehaps they consider that it is normal that a director of a daycare center can make diagnosis.
