shortness of breath...

I'm a 31 year old woman who has been experiening shortness of breath for about 9-10 years now. I had an eating disorder in my early 20's and was very underweight and had a handful of fainting spells. I'm only mentioning this because I don't know if it could be somehow related.

The breathing problem has been something I've ignored as being "out of shape" or "overweight" since that time. I am currently about 20lbs. overweith but I also had a baby recently so I'm still working on losing weight...I really don't believe now that weight has had any factor in this.

I have always had numerous "respritory infections" or assumptions of strep throat through out the years, and never thought much of that either.
I was hospitalized with pnumonia twice when I was an infant.

When I became pregnant last year with my son my shortness of breath became quite severe. Of course my pcp thought nothing of it. He said I had exercised induced ashtma. ppffft, whatever that is. I knew that was'nt what it was. I became very ill about 2 months pregnant with swollwen glands, a hard dry cough and low grade fever with debillitating fatigue. He though I had mono or strep. I did'nt have either and he told me it was just a "virus".

After my sons birth I went back to my pcp because I had preeclampsia and my blood pressure was still high (it is still now after 5months since giving birth). I told him I felt like I was "coming down with something" because my chest felt fluid-y and it hurt when I took a breath. He said my lungs were clear and suspected I had pluesrisy but I had no known cause for it.He ran a ekg in the office which was borderline abnormal He suggested I see a cardiolosist and a pulmonologist.

So I saw the pulmonologist and she did blood work for various autoimmune diseases and I had a spirometer test done along with a ct scan and a echocardiogram.(I did somewhat poorly on the spirometer test and she said one of my immuglobin levels were very low on the blood tests)) She has found nothing except that my thyroid is now low. (it was'nt when my pcp checked it in oct.). I started taking synthroid about a month ago but I am not feeling at all better and my shortness of breath is getting really bad. Just getting dressed or carrying my son down the hallway are leaving me extremely weak.
I've noticed my right arm has been numb as well. My arms feel ridiculously weak. I have had a very deep dry cough when I laugh really hard and sometimes when I breathe in really deeply as well.

I am supposed to get a stress test done but that is'nt until the end of march and I don't see tha pulmonologist until the end of April.

I don't know what to do. I feel strongly that there is something severly wrong with me and it is not just my hypothyroid or high blood pressure.
My quality of life is rapidly declining and I'm not sure what to do since no doctors seem to have an answer. My husband asked me yesterday if I wanted to go to the emergency room but what would be the point...they are'nt going to know anything either.

does anyone else have these symptoms or feel this way too?
I would really appreciate any input.:(

  • Have you had your adrenals checked? Are your blood oxygen levels normal or low? Are you breastfeeding? Are you taking any supplements? did you have any complications with the birth? In Chinese medicine, the kidneys and the lungs have a very close relationship to each other. Your history of an eating disorder could have caused an extreme imbalance in your kidneys, thus causing your shortness of breath as the kidneys are failing to grasp the Lung Qi. Also, after childbirth you are in a weakened state and need time to strengthen your body. Please consider trying acupuncture and Chinese medicine to help get you back in balance. It is great for upper respiratory and kidney related disorders. To find a practitioner visit www.acufinder.com. Best wishes.DOM

  • I did have a complicated delivery and I had preeclampsia and afterwards I had a uterine infection. I am not breastfeeding..or taking anything except synthroid for my thyroid. well, I started having tenderness is my lower back and my chest pain and shortness of breath worsend this week so I went to the ER thinking there was something really wrong...they told me there was nothing they can do(without testing anything on me btw) and that I needed to leave. sooo, I went to my regular dr. and things went HORRIBLE!!he proceeded to tell me in a very annoyed way that I am depressed and that I need a psychiatrist. I was adamnat that I was not depressed and that just because I had a baby was no reason to think this. I started to tear up out of frustration that no one can help me and he was all see you're crying you're depressed. He said there was nothing he can do because I refused to believe his diagnosis and because the pulmonologist had not found anything. and that there was no disease that has all the symptoms I was having. uuhh, whatever to that because everytime I put in my symptoms a TON of things come up. My right arm was numb for about 3 days prior to all this so that had me worried as well...both of them seem to go numb at night and I feel sickest at night when lying down...but what the ***l do I know I'm just a crazy postpartum depressed woman, right?!

  • hi, i read your story. Have you ever been tested for Lyme disease and it's co-infections? All of your symptoms are lyme related. Even if you have been tested before, you might need more sensitive testing with the proper lab.I had similar symptoms and it took 2 years and possible permanent damage to diagnosis me. I'll be waiting for your response.

I quit taking my blood pressure meds and the synthroid and I am already feeling much better. I still have very swollen hands and achey feelings and shortness of breath but the extreme mucsle weakness and chest pain are subsiding. sooo, I don't know...maybe I was going hyperthyroid from my dosage. but I still don't know whay my arm is going numb...we'll see eventually and hopefully I guess. thanks for your input...I will definitely look into it.:)

  • Please go to the cardiologist and insist you be checked for coronary artery disease or other types of cardiac diseases. Heart diease is the #1 killer of women and the onset of the cardiac disease is occurring younger and younger. Depending on the length and severity of your eating disorder you may have done damage to your heart. Many times this can be helped with drugs. Do you have any swelling of your arms, legs, face, etc?

  • I have babesia which I have been treated for and was better for several months but now am very sick. It includes shortness of breath, right arm numbness and feeling misarable. I haven't had babies in 8 years and I'm only depressed that I can't seem to get these symptoms under control, long term.BTW - I contracted babesia from a tick bite almost 2 years ago. I also have lyme disease and a few other coinfections but the babesia symptoms are by far the most debilitating

  • I am an echo tech, so I actually perform the echocardiograms. I am for sure not a doctor, they know what they are doing. My question is how your heart looked? Did they say anything about a low Ejection Fraction, or it looked a little weak at all? To me, I would imagine them saying something to you about the echo results if this was so, but that might be why they are doing a stress test. It is not unheard of, but 31 is a little young for having Coronary Artery Disease, well not the plaque build up kind. I just know in my profession, that if you were having those symptoms they would order an echo to rule out cardiomyopathy. They say it is a good idea for any woman who is pregnant to have an echo done 3 months before and 3 months after giving birth. This condition has an unknown cause. Its really by chance. They say if you have this condition, you should be extremely cautious of having another child. Your hearts normal Ejection Fraction is 55-70%. I have seen postpartum women come in, some very young, with an Ejection Fraction in the 30's. This means, less blood flow to all of your organs. This could cause the Shortness of Breath because the blood is not circulating enough, so it hangs out in the lungs longer than it should. These are very weak hearts and the chambers can become enlarged. It is not for sure something you have, it is just what I see in the field. Here is something on WebMD that is a good short explaination. I think they would have told you already if they suspected this. Hope this helps, but those symptoms can be a lot of things. http://www.webmd.com/baby/peripartum-cardiomyopathy-pregnancy

  • wow, everyone has been so helpful, thank you.apparently my echo was fine ( I had a bubble study along with it ) I still have so much fluid retention in my hands...and maybe my face and abdomen although ,those are kind of hard to tell.My blood pressure has been in the 160/100's...NOT GOOD!! but my stupid pcp took me off my blood pressure meds because he said "they make depression worse"...uhh, I'm not depressed dumb **s!!! and now my organs are getting irreversible damage because you took my medicine away!!!so needless to say I'm looking for another doctor. I was not so smart and had some drinks at a girls night out..nothing crazy just a few beers. but let me tell you I really felt as if I were dying the following 3 days. my lower back was tender and painful, my blood pressure was very high, the shortness of breath was unbearable. I feel sometimes like I'm a crazy person because I have all these symptoms but something in my gut tells me they are all related because I have felt this way for many years now.... since the pregnancy have the symptoms gotten much worse.I'm trying to rule things out..it just such a SLOW process...one doctor says to see so and so another says go to the ER the ER says go to your pcp....it's just exhausting because all the while I am getting weaker and weaker. My mother had a brain anyruism at 38 and has had bypass surgery along with heart failure before the age of 50, my uncle dropped dead at 36 from a heart related problem...along with both my grandparents dying of heart problems...mind you they all smoked heavily...but it's still in my genetics.so I'm having the stress test at the end of this month...but what I wonder is...would'nt something ahve already shown up on the chest x-rays or the echo or ct scans?I just don't know anymore...and the doctors don't seem to want to be "bothered" by my complaints...I'm at a loss.

  • Please do not listen to anything Shula or Acuann tell you. My sister just passed away because Shula and Acuann told her that her doctor was wrong and she did not have a serious condition. Acuann even told her to get acupuncture to get healed. These people are going to be investigated for practicing medicine without a license. Shula and Acuann are specifically wanted in connection with my sisters homocide. Thats right homocide. If she would have listened to her doctor instead of these internet quacks she would still be here today. Rest assured I will do everything in my power to put these two behind bars and shut this website down for good.

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • just because someone on the internet says to do so and so does not mean I am going to do it...doctor or not. I am sorry for your loss but I am on here because MY OWN doctors will not listen to me and are trying to blow me off as depressed.I am on here to hear if anyone else has similiar symptoms or to find some sort of starting point. I will be looking into the lyme disease (although I don't ever recall having a tick bite) after my stress test is done.In the meantime I have to find a new doctor for my blood pressure. I'm still working on that one. I still feel pretty badly but better since I stopped the synthroid...mainly at night and when I first wake up is when I feel the worst. It's so hard to sleep with your arm going numb all night, I get so what feels like all fluid-y at night just everywhere, and now in the morning I have a dry cough for a little bit...but It always goes away except when I laugh really hard, and the tenderness where my kidnys are is worse at night, too.so that's what's happenning with me..I also wonder whats up with the posts being backwards? Is there some sort of setting to fix this..it's REALLY annoying. thank you guys for all your insights...I really do appreciate it.

  • I'd suggest getting checked for a pheochromocytoma (adrenal gland tumor). Your kidney pain and high blood pressure could be caused by a PHEO. It could also make you feel short of breath, anxious, etc.
