This is problem with my wife.
Present Age - 41 (1965 born)
Rectal bleeding since - age of 16 or so
Initial suggestion - That time doctors said it is caused by piles and there is no cure for it.
1988 - We married
1992 - First problem. No stool pass, stomach pain, rectum sees to be blocked. Cure - Proctocelesis Enema.
1993 to 1997 - The above incident occurred several times. We did many tests (USG ) and without any result.
1998 - I admitted her in hospital stating that they should keep on doing different tests till the reason is found. After doing colonoscopy and biopsy it was found that she had TB (Tuberculosis Bacillus) infection in colon at about 5 cm above rectum. We started TB treatment (multi drug therapy)
1999 - After six months of last diagnosis we did colonoscopy and biopsy again. This time there was no TB found instead it said she has Ulceritis Colitis. Along with TB treatment we started giving her Mesacol Tablet (5-aminosalicylate). Once she was bleeding profusely through rectum (at least 1.5 liter of blood was drained out) but no specific reason could be established.
2000 - It seems to be cured.
2001 - Again similar problem. Rectal bleeding and problematic bowl movement. We did colonoscopy and biopsy. Its found that the ulcer had cured but left a Stricture. It was also found that there are dysplastic changes and it may be mild carcinogenic. We did repeat biopsy 3 more times but no other test showed any carcinogenic findings.
2002 - We started giving her Mesacol (5-aminosalicylate) enema. Then we did dialect her stricture and finally she was operated for TEMS (Trans Endocrine Micro Surgery). With LASER her stricture was removed.
2003-2004 - She was perfectly normal. Earlier for 15 to 20 years her stool was too narrow. Only now her stool became normal. Her body weight increased so much that she had to go through controlled diet. We were happy.
2005 - The nightmare started again. One morning suddenly she started bleeding profusely through rectum - at least 1.5 liter of blood in one day. We did all the tests. No TB, no Ulceritis colitis, no piles. Doctors concluded it as a Solitary Rectal Ulcer and said there is no cure for it. No carcinogenic symptom.
2006 - Till date there is no sure solution. She keeps on bleeding little occasionally. When we administer Mesacol (5-aminosalicylate) enema - 5 to 6 nos. - 1 every day she gets better. Bleeding stops. However it reappears after 2/3 months. Her body weight has come down to initial state. Her pressure is low.
Other informations -
1. She had a habit of removing impacted stool with a finger around at the age of 15.
2. We have seen some particular food causes more bleeding. It seems this ulcer is allergic to - Prawn, Crab, Hydrogenated Vegetable oil, Red chillies etc.
I am sorry it has become too big and may be little painful to read. However we are in problem and know no sure solution. We will be ever grateful if any one can show us path. Thanks.
