Psychotic Hallucinations - Bipolar I or Schizophrenia?

I first experienced psychotic hallucinations when I was 44 and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. However I have never had manic depression. I actually most identify with the character from the movie: "A Beautiful Mind" of a mathematician who in real life heard voices and entered into what he believed was a world filled with conspiracy. Could I have been misdiagnosed, particularly as this man was diagnosed with schizophrenia?
