My daughter was 12 at the time. She's an A plus student, some would say over achiever, and athletic. The first day back to school over christmas vacation she came home saying her back hurt and throat hurt and she feels like she is getting sick. I told her it is probably the flu and give it a couple of days. It was going around. Two days later her back hurt and she could barley move. Took her to her doctor. She had swollen glands and mucle spasms in her lowerback . Another two days. She could not stand and looked as if death warmed over. White as a ghost in her face. The Doctor sent her for bloodwork and gave her mucle relaxers. No relief. Pain was settling in ,her head was splitting with pain. Sent to the E.R. Test after test, found nothing, thought it was stress related. We set out for physical theropy,She could not walk and the Doctor never seen anything like it. He called our family doctor ,then sent her to another hospital. Test after test could not explain. My husband and I suggested Lyme disease because of were we lived and we knew people close to us that had it and that it made sense. The 1st and 2nd hospitals told us they ruled it out. They had no answer. Off home we went and my daughter was getting sicker, family doctor was shaking his head. Off to the third top ten hospital.Diagnosis..R.S.D. brought on by in her head overachiever. Doctor's words. We suggested Lyme disease.Would not hear of it. Sent home. Got records and asked around .
Got in to see a doctor who only deals in Lyme to take a look at her. Physical exam he said,"he could lay money on it. It's lyme."We will wait for the testing to come back. Mean while the records I gathered I gave to the doctor and he said,"I tought she tested negitive for lyme?" That is what they told me. She tested positive not in one hospital but by the second hospital the titter was even more elevated and Mono too boot.
She spent the first six months in a wheelchair. Could not move and was in horrible pain in which morphine did not touch.Shaking of the legs so bad she wanted us to tie her legs down. Before we found a Doctor to listen,She wanted us to let her die. Unacceptable!
She came home saying,"I don't feel good." We went through H_ _ _! I threatened at the last hospital that I was going to feed store and administer Amoxicillin myself. We begged for them to try Doxi.. They wouldn't. The 1st week on antibiotics she stopped shaking, but sick from Herxing. The weeks passed and she started to get better and better. I tried to find a lawyer to take on the case. No one would touch it.
She had Lyme Disease.... Proud to say she went from in a wheelchair and she could not count 50 cents ,too Honor Roll student and Volleyball player after 4 months of treatement. I am so thankful. The scar she has is depression and anxiety. Managed by medication, thankfully. Scared the symtoms will come back and paranoid of every illness, but alive. It was all because we did not give up and we finally found some one who listened.

  • Just today I contacted Children Mercy Hospital for my 5 year old son. No one is listening to me. My son has OSA Obstructed sleep Apnea. I have video to present to the ENT doctor and soon my sons Primary care doctor will know how wrong she is to be treating my son as if he has a simple allergy problem. I am glad that you never gave up. Since returning from iraq in 2004, I have observed my son with OSA so severe I have wanted to blow air into his body. I will never give up, my sons mom is so ignorent that she is allowing my son to suffer as he sleeps.

  • Armyranger, I am so sorry your son is so ill. I could not imagine not be able to get a breath. How scarry and how fustrating it for you. Does he have sever allergies? Maybe something in his room irritating him? (A thought.)Hey we dumped our First doctor cold. We needed someone who would listen and work with us not against us. We asked around. We followed our heart. I refused to believe nothing was causing it. We got lucky through grace. Never give up!!! Thinking of you, pamgiam

It was all because we did not give up and we finally found some one who listened. Is your daughter on antidepresants? Do you know that meds for depression, anxiety, and panic attacks work by supressing the immune system? I other words her 'psychiatric' symptoms might be symptoms of immune dysfunction that are directly related to the infection. The infection is gone but this is what's left. If her immune system is down, what's going to protect her?It really sounds like she has a string of new symptoms that orginiated with the infection.

  • She will always have lyme disease. This is somethimg there is no cure. She will be in remission so to speak. Antibiotics (amoxicillion) for the rest of her life. We have her on a diet and supplements to keep her immune system up and it seems to be working. Excercise is the key too. If I can keep her healthy. When she first got sick she had a horrible high fever 104 degrees and when she was at her sickest her temp was 92 degrees F. for months. Now I am happy to say her temp. is 98.2 degrees f. and that thrills the heck out of me.She is on Citalopram HBR 20 MG 1/2 tablet a Day and Alprazolam.25mg when needed.

  • Your story is awful. I hope you pursue the legal profession as actively as you pursued a doctor. You have two hospitals that ignored the test results. You might have to go to another town to find one.

There are some studies that argue that the vaccines and bugs given to military personal can be transferred to their children just by casual contact and make them sick. Sick can be the nervous system dysfunction that you describe on your child.NAET doctors take a holistic approach to nervous system problems- like Gulf War disease. naet.com for a doctor near you.Best,Fruity.

You might have to go to another town to find one. I did pursue legel. No on wanted to take it on. I am a Pennsylvanian. Small Town. I went to some big town lawyers. They said they did not want to pursue it. You know any lawyers? I am still angry over the medical professions ignorance. They were playing with my childs life and well being ,only I think it was to get insurance money. I'll be *****d for the rest of my life. I have to be thankful though, I got my kid back. She is almost back to a 100%. I am greatful for that.

  • My ex-husband is a lawyer, but I won't send you to him!!! Well, depending on the statute of limitations (2 years), I would set up something in http://www.findlaw.com/#and use the largest city close to you or you won't get any response. If a lawyer contacts you, then you can talk over the phone before traveling to see him. Just cut and paste your story that you posted here into the details section at Find Law.Good Luck...
