hi Dr. Cottle!! We were so pleased to see you on the health board. You may not remember, but a little over a year ago we wrote to you on MedHealth about my husband Dan and the terrible pain he was going through in the hospital. They removed a really large stone from the tube at his liver and he's been great ever since thanks to your advice!!!!!

I wanted to ask you about our daughter. She's 23 and for the past 4 months now she has been complaining of strange symptoms, ie muscle spasms that come and go, dizziness and problems with her vision(she says there is a spot that comes and goes from her vision in one eye). She also says that her left leg sometimes gets weak and she feels sort of uncoordinated. The symptoms sort of come and go and there are days when she says she feels fine and then others that are horrible.

We've been to our doctor about this three times now and he keeps telling us that it's just stress. My daughter is not a stressed person and she keeps insisting something is wrong. They tried her on a drug to see if would help and said it was for depression. My God, our daughter is not depressed and if she is, it's because they won't take her seriously. She tried the medicine and said it made her sick to her stomach and she felt like she was in a dream while taking it, so she stopped.

Is there a specialist we should see about her symptoms and could all of this really be just from stress?????? She gets worse, then better but it has us worried.

We would really appreciate any help or guidance you can provide and look forward to hearing back from you soon!

Jill & Dan, Boston

  • Well, my goodness! I had to think for a moment. Your husband runs an advertising firm or something similiar I believe. I do indeed remember now. I trust he is continuing to do well and I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is experiencing problems. I'm surprised that her doctors would diagnose stress or depression unless tests normally performed in the presence of such symptoms are negative. I need to know whether the following tests were conducted: CSF studies, electrophoresis and IgG index Myelin basic protein MRI Visual Evoked Potentials We need to see whether a certain immune problem may be taking place and in order to generally rule it out, we need to see the results of the above-mentioned tests. Once you either have the results or have the tests performed, by all means post it here and I'll be more than happy to take a look and see if we can help. Once again, it was great to hear from you and we'll be speaking again soon. Best regards, J Cottle, MD
