Im a 42 year old widow and it could have been prevented,In july of 2006 my husbands mother passed away and the family all stayed at a hotel, Me and my husband were in the jacuzzi and I ran and got into the pool he was 6'4 and when he jmped in he broke his heel in half hitting the bottom. He did not go to hospital for 5 weeks and they said it was a clean break so try to stay off it for another 2 weeks, He kept haveing problems with swelling and he had a tear in the skin on the top of his foot, He then had to go spend 2 weeks in Jail on work release, on the 2nd weekend he called and said don't come get me im going into srait time at the jail , he was in the tents. When he got to the jail it was empty they had to sanatize it from a staff going around, he came home and his legs over the next 6 monthes were getting worse and he got lg sores that were draining, His Dr kept telling him a diffrent diagnose everytime he wold go, First he had a heart problem, ran tests perfect, Well all in all he spent 1,000's of dollors on ER, urgent care,Chiropractor thinking it was poor curculation or pinched nerve, By Dec of 07 he was giving up hope, He went to a heart hospital they said it was a staff infection cellulitis gave him cyndemiacin 10 days and if not better he needed IV drugs , After the meds were done it was better a couple weeks, and I was hospitalized , then it got worse again, but his insurance he had to go to another hospital , He went to the ER they did ekg, ultrasounds ,sent him home, Then He returned again by this time he had to walk with a cain and was in severe pain mucsle spasms, They took blood and set him in waiting room for 8 hrs so he came home, 4 days later he got a call to come back it was possitive for strep, We waited 6 hrs nothing finally after 8 hrs we asked for his blood test and we would go to another hospital 8 hrs and they called him to come in,He was so tired,We went to another ER he had started to beed from his rectom black stool, And chills, I told the dr he was possitive strep, and bleeding i'm a MA and I knew that had to be a GI bleed, My husband walked into this ER there was nobody in waiting room, They told me that he had to have some tests done go get some rest and we will call you, We were only 10 min away, At 4am 4 hrs after I took him he calls to come get him, I could not believe it, I get there he was not in waiting room, they said he needs help dressing, I went back he was hanging off of the end of the bed with his pants around his ankle's, I said to him what did they say and the Dr came said to me , He has poor curculation and edema with a infection iiiiin the sore , gave him a script for Kflex and walked out, I was shakeing by this point , he started to gasp for air so I put my o2 on him and went to the couter the 2 nurses were eating chips the Dr looked at me turned his head and walked away. I said why are you sending him home he getting weaker by the minute, he can't breath, I put my o2 on him the nurse came over and went to his room get that o2 off of him its a script why don't you put a oximeter on him , I said you are the nurse I don't carry one, Do yuou she put it on it was 96, she sais see better then mine, It started dropping ,I said please he needs treatment he has strep in his blood, and bleeding, Dr needs reason to admitt she says, Isay thats not reason enough, takes 3 days to get the blood work back and she walked out, so I got him all dressed , I then went out and said I have a clot in my leg and a lung desease can you atleast get me a wheel chair I can't carry him out on my back. She comes in with one with only 1 leg rest , I was crying I got him in chair and I said you don't want to take care of people you want to eat chips all night so stuuff our faces if anything happens to him in 3 days I hold you all responsible,He got worse by that evening I 911 him out county Hospital they took him and hIs BP dropped to 90/60 he had a heart attack and all his organs started to shut down they went in stopped the bleeding in his stomache, they had to inavate him and then he was building pressure so they took him to OR and opened his stomach and had to leave it open to release pressure and keep from smashing his organs, His amonia levels for his size should be 9 his was 400 but he did not smell at all, He was on full life support by 10 pm that night , He was sent home from that ER on 2-15-08 at 4:30am and he was taken off life support at 10;30pm on the 17th he was pernounced dead. They said he would have had severe brain damage from the levels if he did survive. I had to watch my husband die because they misdiagnosed him and then even after told them what was going on they still did not treat for infection in his blood, I never thought for a minute I would loose him, This was my 2nd Marriage after 18 years of living in a abuseive marriage very abbusive, He never married had no children He was 45 when we met and 52 when died, He was a very smart man he was a machines and mechanic, he played the Guitar by ear he was good to my children, and lived to see me smile, he was my best friend and the love of my life and it took us so long to find each other , We were getting ready to move to the mountains in our dream home , And it was all taken away . I love you Bradley H Stevens FOREVER!

  • Jolene, I'm so terribly sorry to hear a story like that, that you had that really awful experience. My father was almost killed a few years ago my medical incompetance, sending him home several times after surgery with a raging infection and an internal hole in his esophagus. Two more hours delay of treatment would have killed him. Was an autopsy performed so that you know what was going on? I can't understand why they didn't treat Bradley a whole lot sooner. It seems like nobody was going to cut you a break. When the bacterial toxins start reaching a certain level, the organs start breaking down and everything fails whether the antibiotic is killiing them or not; or sometimes because the bacterial deaths dump even more toxins into the blood suddenly. Could the infection have started when he busted open his heel? This tragedy takes so much from you and nothing I say can do anything about it. I wish you well and hope that you can reach peace with it.

  • I would get the best ***n attorney you can find and sue the crap out of each and every doctor that didn't help your husband! This is CLEARLY a malpractice case and although it won't bring your husband back it may save someone else's husband or child! I wish you the best and I know what you're going through but in my case it's myself that is sick and have been for two years now and still no help...Good luck!Cathy
