my birth control made me mentally ill

For years I struggled with medications, hospitalizations, more medications, disability. I was diagnosed with depression, then bipolar, then schizoaffective. I had hallucinations, delusions, depression, suicidal thoughts. This all started when I went on birth control. When I changed birth control to a low dose pill it got significantly better. I was able to function again, got off disability, got off most of my meds, etc. I just stopped birth control entirely and I feel amazing. So healthy, balanced, energized. None of my doctors believe me that my birth control caused my mental illness, but I just know it is true! Has anyone had similar experiences?

  • 6 weeks after my daughters birth I started taking the mini pill (Ive never been on the pill before this). Within 24 hrs it was starting to affect me after taking it for several days, it was really affecting me quite badly but I didnt know that was the issue at the time thou I suspected it. I asked a doctor about it and they told me it wouldnt be that... Within 2 weeks thou of starting the progesterone only pill.. I got put in a mental hospital for a week due to it. I nearly killed both myself and my baby. They diagnosed severe post natal depression but it was that pill.. I knew I hadnt felt the same mood wise since taking it So I didnt take any meds for PND but stopped that mini pill and suddenly became much much better. ......... Over the past 12mths.. Ive spoken to 3 others which were on the normal conceptive pill who went like crazy or had major mood issues after taking it which stopped as soon as they stopped the pill. They all said their issues were certainly due to the pill I think this issue is more common then doctors realise... most arent even aware it can cause serious mental health issues in some of us. I personally think there should be a warning on it about this.
