I was injured and went to the ER and told them I was going into shock, mech of injury etc. They took x-rays and told me I had a torn ACL to see a ortho surg when swelling goes down. I was given a splint and told to ice and elevate.
A few hours later I took the splint of as I was on the couch and the ice was not helping and my calf was huge so I called the ER and was told not to come back in and continue to ice and elevate. So I watched a baseball game and there was no improvement but it was getting worse so i called again. Got the same answer from the ER so I went back in anyway.
When I got there they were chiding me for coming back in but I told them I wasnt leaving and when the PM ER doc seen it he knew I had compartment syndrome and after 5 hours of tests that were excruciating and performed multiple times I had surgery to save my leg/life as my calf was at 46 psi from a fractured knee draining into the calf compartments.
I spent 8 days in hospital with wound vac on leg sucking out blood and fluid and they would sew up part of the 13'' incisions on both side of my calf every couple days till it was closed up and the swelling was down.I was discharged and non weight bearing for 2 months. I wanted to have the fractures surgically repaired but had no say in the matter. Then I was told to go back to work for two 20 hour weeks.
I informed the doc that it was not working out and he told me my vacation was over and to qiut being a baby. So I worked , learned how to walk again , went to therapy 2-3 times a week lifting weight and exercising affected leg. I was telling PT something was wrong and got nowhere. The doctor said I was fine and gave me orders to walk , run , ski to get leg into shape. Well I could walk like a hunchback but running and sking were not a option. After 2 months at work I went back to doc and told him I couldnt take it any more. I was icing knee/leg every 2 hours and pain was intense not to mention the leg was not getting any better.
Well he did another MRI and when he got the results he asked me how the ***l could I walk! My knee was still fractured this is over 4 months into the injury. He said my knee must have been dislocated and my ACL and PCL should have snapped but pulled the bone out of the top of the tibia like 1'' deep. My mcl was hanging by a strand or two and a tear in the meniscus.
Needless to say I found another doc to fix my knee as the first one was whinning about how hard the surgery may be and screws being too long and he wanted me to wear a bone stimulator and come back in 6 months. I could not take it any more so I went to the second opinion and after a couple months he put 4 - 2.5'' screws in the knee.
I am making this short as possble sorry. Well after getting hurt in work hardening in my hand I was kicked out of Wcomp. My leg is in terrible shape and wish sometimes it would have been cut off. I have RSD type symptoms but I am told I dont have RSD go figure. Some of my muscles dont work right and I have constant pain , numbness, tingling, my leg is like a tuning fork, It gets very cold while the rest of my body is sweating, sometimes the leg is on fire and I could go on.
I cannot do much of anything that takes 2-4 hours as the leg goes wild and affects my whole body. I thought I would have a med malpractice case and now the lawyer I chose tells me he wont take the case as it will be to hard to win. Now what do I do?
