  • Hi,I don't know much about it but I will give what is in one of my medical books. Polycythemia Vera often starts with: Drowsiness, forgetfulness, dizziness. Other symptoms may include: Itching after hot baths, skin of the face and extremities becomes bluish-red. Some redness of the mucous membranes, particularly of the eyes. Of unknown cause. Stems from an overgrowth of blood-forming tissues in the bone marrow, resulting in excessive amounts of red cells in the blood, with a thickening of the blood and an increased tendency to clotting. WHAT TO DO:1) CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY! If long untreated, can lead to stroke and intestinal hemorrhages.2) For treatment, phlebotomy (blood-letting) may be used to reduce blood thickness and the number of red cells. Medication may be prescribed to control the over-production of red cells. I hope that this helps...good luck ... skeeter

  • My father has this, it is important to know that there are primary and secondary types of PV. Secondary is often due to respiratory problems and smoking. The primary type is quite rare, and is due to an overproduction or red blood cells components in the bone marrow. A bone marrow biopsy is needed to tell the difference between primary and secondary.PV can lead to chronic leukemia in time. The red skin, high blood pressure, intense itching, headache and fatigue are all signs of PV. Antihistamines sometimes helpi with the itching. There is actually more risk for forming blood clots that hemorrages. Many people with PV need to be on blood thinners.
