is it really herpes, or did the dr just not know what to say

So about 3 years ago I was dating this guy for about 6 months. I thought we were in love, well I was in love anyway, and I trusted him to be faithful and didn't use a condom. Come to find out he was sleeping with any girl who would put out! So when I broke it off I naturally went and got tested. And I remember the last time we had sex right before the break up, intercourse was VERY painful. Like he was shoving a cutting knife up there. I also had one marble sized(the smaller ones) pimple like bump under my skin on the inside of my vagina lip. I was able to pop it and white puss came out. The dr did a culture and blood test and was confident that it was NOT herpes. 5 days later I got a phone call, my heart sunk when I heard I had hsv. She didn't even bother explaining anything to me or even give me a chance to soak it in and ask questions before she told me she had prescribed me valtrex. It seemed it would never go away, so she put me on the once daily thinking that would help. It eventually went away. And I haven't had the painful sex since. But I have had a few more times of getting just this one bump. But here is where it gets sticky. I switched drs, and just last week I went for my well Womans. They knew of my herpes but ran the std test again. And it all came back clean!? So did they maybe not test me for herpes because my chart says I already have it. Or did I never have it at all?
