I recently started developing headaches and a lumpy, painful swelling on the mastoid bone. I went to the doctor who diagnosed a ear infection. I have been on antibiotics for 3 days but instead of getting better the headaches have increased and the lump is now the size of a golfball.

Is it possible i have been misdiagnosed because i think i may have mastoiditis?

Thanks

  • How long did your doctor tell you the antibiotics should be taken for. Please Finish the Course (unless things start to go really bad. However it is possible that if the doctor did not send off a specimen to be tested the bacteria infecting you are resistant to the antibiotic you are taking. By five days you should be definatly feeling better from the antibiotics so give it al little longer. If you are not feeling better by then, return to your doctor. My daughter has mastoiditis from a Staphylococcus aureus lung infection. The mastoid bone can swell up and contrict veins coming from the brain so do go back to yoour doctor if you think the antibiotics are not working. My daughter ended up having intravenous Flocloxacillin or something like that because the first course of Bactrim (sulpher methoxadyl trimethoprim)did not work as the Staph was resistant to that antibiotic. I told him it would not work because I work in a microbiology lab and had tested the Staph in her sputum)I hope I have not scared you and I hope that by the time you read this your lump has gone down and you are feeling better because the antibiotics have finally made their way to you mastoid bone and done their job. GOOD LUCK ( I am not a doctor, just trying to help)

  • MASTOIDITIS, OKAY I can't spell in a hurry and mastitis hurts like crazy but is NOT close to your brain, and won't kill you generally.
