I was misdiagnosed until age 16 in 1970 as Asphasic and in particular the early years as Mentelly Retarded or mentelly disabled as it is now called. It was two wellknown mds in Philadelphia and in Maryland who diagnosed me as Asphasic. At age 16, I went to Temple Audilogy Clincic and was diagnosed as SensouriNeural hearing loss. To explain it to laypeople out there, Asphasia is distortion of language coming at you and out of you wrong and there are differnet types, Sensourineual hearing loss is distortion of sound coming at you. There are 3 types of hearing loss, one is the combination of my loss and Conductivie hearing loss which is all one has to do is speak louder. This misdiagnosis cost me greatly because I went to special schools that hurt me greatly in education, When I was correctly diagnosed and had the right hearing aid, sounds like birds chirping, parents speaking without being loud, etc makes quite a difference in my life. I went to a regular school a year later. In a way , I still was not correctly equipped with two hearings until 6 years ago. I should have been fitted with two aids instead of just one. It made a big differecne in my speech.
For some reason Maryland, Pennsyvania, and Deleware made these incorrect diagnosis by not have the pure audiometer, Weird,,any other of these stories out there
