In January of 2006 I had a cerclage due to an incompetent cervix and was released home on total bedrest. The high risk doctor that we got "assigned" to was anything but a helpful medical professional. He had me do vaginal suppositories that had NO proof or studies in helping prevent preterm labor. I asked if it was wise doing this twice a day and not being able to shower everyday, I kept asking about introducing bacteria into the vagina and he told me not to worry. At 23 weeks I felt like I was having contractions and I had bleeding and uterine pain. The hospital said it was just a UTI and not to worry, they discharged me back home. The next day I was back at the hospital 5cm dialated and fully efaced. The symptoms I had been complaining to my "doctor" about for a week were infact more serious than I thought and the believed reason my son was born at 24 weeks. The vaginal suppositories WERE introducing bacteria into the uterus which brewed for a few weeks and eventually caused severe chorioamnionitis and preterm birth.
Due to this severe infection my son was born at 1lb 10oz with severe sepsis, a symptom of maternal chorioamnionitis, and I had blood clots in the uterus. We almost lost our precious son due to misdiagnosis and the lack of attention our high risk doctor gave us with my symptoms. Had he just done a blood test on me treatment could have been started.
