Chlorine/Ammonia Taste

This turned out to be a symptom of kidney failure for me. I was previously told by my primary care physician that it was my sinuses. I also had leg cramps and shortness of breath which was brought on by anemia. I was anemic because my kidneys had stopped functioning and was no longer making red blood cells. I had no taste for any particular food and I was still making urine, but they were not filtering as they should. I am temporarily on dialysis, and if my kidneys don't resume working, I will be permanently on dialysis until I can't get a transplant.

If you have this this particular taste, have it checked out by a specialist.

I get a very strong ammonia taste/smell when I eat foods that contain vinegar. I am getting very worried.

  • Did you have any bloodwork to suggest kidney failure? I have a lot of pain around my kidneys and that metallic taste, but all of my bloodwork is normal.
