Abscessed Tooth and Herpes

There is a woman with whom I've been involve for nearly 18 years. Early on in our relationship she gave me the genital herpes virus, and claims that she contracted it by touching an abscessed to she had (allegedly caused by her dentist when he "broke" a molar during extraction), and then forgetting to wash her hands, touched her vaginal area. I don't believe a person can create and transmit the herpes virus within and to themselves. So, I'm just wondering if anyone could confirm or deny is a situation like this could actually occur?
