Can your blood work come back normal if you have Hodgkins or Non hodgkins? What are some of the symptoms? I'm a little nervous because my 9 year son has a lump under his chin for a couple of months. It is mobile and painless. His first blood test came back with his ESR slightly high at 6.2 but the second came back normal. I have been to 3 different Drs they all seem to think it is benign but the possibility of cancer still sticks in the back of my mind. They all think it should be removed so he is going for surgery tomorrow 4/24 and they will biopsy it. My other concern is he has had an mri and it shows other lymph nodes around it. A week before that lump under his chin showed up he had groin pain and we took it as a pulled muscle-he was training for soccer. I mentioned it to the Drs and they don't think it's related. We will find out soon what caused it but I was just curious. I know it could be so many other things not to worry about.

  • Good luck to you and your son. I have read that the glands that are fixed and don't move around are more likely to be cancerous. I hope you get some answers and everything works out great for you. I had a child who was undiagnosed for a while and it was very stressful, so I know what you're going through.

  • ESR isn't a reliable test. Doctors have long since used CRP levels as it is more accurate. I wonder if your son might have been infected with the Epstein-Barr Virus? It can cause gland swelling which may remain that way for months if not years. Even if he didn't come down with mononucleosis doesn't mean he wasn't infected with the virus. Unfortunately, the EBV has been known to cause a certain type of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma (Burkitts Lymphoma) in some instances.Usually the symptoms would include night sweats, weight loss, fever, fatigue, and even rash-type skin problems. Blood testing is only useful in determining if the cancer has affected internal organ functions, biopsy is the only way to confirm. Good for you for being so pro-active with this and getting the matter checked out. Let us know what happens.

  • Thank you.The surgery went well. The Dr said the lymph node was pretty big. The first test came back benign-thank god! We just have to wait for the 2nd test result which he seems to think it will be the same.

I guess I am reading too much and mixing things up. As for the Epstein Barr virus I did suggest to the Dr about Mono because there are a few people we know that he has been around who have had it recently. The Dr told me we will find out when the biopsy comes back. As for the other symptoms for Non Hodgkins he didn't have any of them. Although you don't have to have them to have lymphoma but it was a little more relief that he didn't experience any other symptoms. I will not be fully relieved until the 2nd biopsy comes back and that should be in a couple of days.
