Question on stages of Cirrhosis

For those of you who have lost loved ones from Cirrhosis, I'm sorry for your loss, and my heartfelt condolences for you. For those who have the disease or know someone who currently suffers from it, my heart also goes out to you!

My friend who is in her late 30s has Cirrhosis from excessive drinking. Although I was very good friends with her for 10+ years, I didn't speak to her these last 5+ years because of her behavior. Yet when I learned about her situation and that it's terminal w/o a liver transplant, I decided to do what I can & forget what happened in the past.

Here's what I know: she has congestive heart failure, gallstones, suffered from bloody noses, has many bruises, needs a walker, breathing sounds asthmatic, forgets things & previously had jaundice. She's on disability and lives in a nursing home & has had Cirrhosis at least 6 years, but only learned about it 1+ yr ago.

What stage does she appear to be in? Approximately how much time? I understand that there is not specific time frame since everyone is different, but just wondering if anyone experienced or knows/knew someone who had similar symptons.

Thanks!

  • I think I know my answer...she's in end (late) stage b/c in addition to the symptoms I listed, I realized she also had gallstones, spider veins & hypertension. Also, a few days ago, she started having ascites (swelling of stomach) & edema, & just today had renal failure.

  • Thanks, Kiera. What I'm extremely confused about is that although my friend has all these ailments, can't work & is on Title 19 & disability, she doesn't physically look as bad as I expected. A few of my friends have also said that. We were all expecting her to look very ill. Does anyone know if that's normal?????? Another confusing part is that last wk when I first saw my friend after many yrs, she was accepting that she was dying & that most likely she wouldn't get a transplant. Yet for the last few days, she keeps talking about what she'll do when she moves out of the nursing home into her own place again. My guess is that she's again in denial b/c my friend and I who visited her this past wknd reminded her of what her old life was like.Anyone out there? Any comments, suggestions, etc?????????????????
