My 51 year old brother has been in the hospital for one week with liver failure and kidney failure due to alcoholism. The doctors are trying dialysis and have drained his abdomen twice. Yesterday the doctor said it was not good to drain all of the fluid off and, if needed, they could drain of a little fluid to allow for comfort. No one will give a prognosis other than to say it will be a rough road no matter which way his condition goes.

Does anyone have any experience with both organs shut down?

Does anyone have any experience with both organs shut down?I am going through that same problems with my father. His kidneys shut down about a year ago and has been on dialysis since. His livers have failed due to the HEP B. Just in the last 2 weeks he is not able to get out of his bed without help, he started having tremors in his hands that it made it impossible for him to feed himself, he looks more yellow, always feeling nauseas, weak and wants to sleep all the time. I took him to the hospital once a month to get the water drained, but now it has been every 2 weeks. He was rushed to the hospital and has been there for about a week now. The tremor is caused from the high ammonia in his body because his liver is not working to the fullest. The doctor has not told us his prognosis, but we know it is just a matter of days or months before he is gone. We at one point thought that he was getting well, but from the looks of it..he is not getting any better. A friend just called and told me that her Father was in the hospital for a week had the same symtoms as my father..and a week later he passed away. This is just the beginging of his end stage. My father not only had kidneys and liver failure he had pneumonia and valley fever. Good Luck with your brother I know it is not easy!!! All we can do is pray for a miracle.
