things are actually pretty good at the house now. Bill's amonia levels must be down to an exceptable level as he is aware of the dangers ahead of him if he doesnt follow the doctors orders. He finally figured out that he had better learn to like the lactolose, because that will be a three times a day drink for him (better than vodka and oj for breakfast). He says he is to strong and stubborn to die (this is very true). Unfortunately his vitamin K is not leveling out, and he is having nose bleeds, and his teeth are bleeding. After figureing out his blood sugar levels, his attitude and strength seem to be much better. Michele and i think he is in better shape now than the week of so before he went into the hospital. Unfortunately we were unaware of what symptoms to look out for, now if we see him slipping, we will check him in sooner rather than later i guess. The doctors told michele that he probally has a year to live, but he didnt rule out miracles. i guess i will just enjoy the time we have with a sober father in law and go from there. i think if he sticks with the diabetic diet and takes his meds, he can quite possible beat the odds.

  • He is now complaining of cramps in his back, actually come to think of it he has often mentioned cramps in his legs and back. Is this a symptom or an unrelated complaint? is the anything to relieve this pain? Other than that he is doing real good, testing his sugar and eating pretty good. Michele is *****d at me for going north to fish with a friend for less than 36 hours. i think i need a break too...

  • Get a "Potassium" supplement and that will help him. The diuretics flush Potassium out of the body.Potassium works.:) Hugs Shirley

  • Well it has been a while since i made an update here. Bill is doing ok, but i have a question. He is starting to show some signs of confusion again. Is this something that comes and goes, ala good days and bad days? or is it something that builds to a point where he ends up completely in a stupor again? He is taking the lactulose all the time.

  • wow he is doing great. staying sober and keeping his sugar in check. dont believe the pessimistic assesments that the doctors often relay. If Bill can make a recovery, anyone can.

  • Things have been great for Bill lately. However, one afternoon he was full of amonia, and extremely confused. he had to be admitted to the hospital again. This time it was due to a staph infection in his leg. Apparently the liver is crucial in clearing up other infection within the body. this is just another thing we will have to be aware of going forward.
