Running with a major leg injury.

I am trying to gain information as to how I can run longer distances without having such an excruciating pain. In 2011, I sustained a gun shot wound to the lower right leg while I was in the military. It shattered both my tibia and fibula, and a metal rod had to be inserted in place of my fibula. It took awhile for me to be able to walk again, but I am pass that. I am attempting to run again, and am having problems in the shin area of my leg. I don't know if it is just weak or if there is something I can do to reduce the pain as I run; besides the obvious over the counter pain medication because I have been prescribed ibuprofen from my doctor. Does anyone have any advice or any suggestions what so ever?

Thank you.
