Sharp Knee Pain After Running 2+ Miles

Hello folks.

I'm new on the boards. I found this while searching for information about my increasingly frequent knee pain. Basically, I run 1-3 miles, three times a week and afterwards climbing/descending stairs is painful. Not only does it hurt, it gives out completely. I've fallen twice in my local gym and BARELY caught myself on the railing.

Aside from stairs, my knee is fine. I haven't noticed the pain when doing squats, but i haven't done many squats since it began - I don't want to press my luck.

Anyway, the gist:

What: Sharp knee pain/failure
When: Climbing/descending stairs (descending is worse) after running 2+ miles.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  • I was just doing searches and I was surprised to come across your post. I am experiencing the exact same symptoms. I am a 39 year old femail and I train with an athletic trainer 2-3x a week...no pain. When I run for cardio exercise or a 5k and about 2-2.5 miles into I experience knee pain and then it is very painful to go up or down stairs. I can't replicate the pain with any other exercise.I just had an MRI and it seemed more out of process of elimination they told me I could 1. Have surgery to have my Plica removed. 2. Stop running or 3. Take an anti inflamatory before running.I see your post is from last year and would love to hear if you discovered anything?
