Pain around fibular head area of knee

Two years ago i had surgery to repair a torn meniscus. The minute i stepped off the operating table, i had a sharp pain around the fibular head area (where the two bone meet). This was no where near the surgery site. For a week later, the pain worsened to the point of excruciating and not being able to move my knee. it has gotten better, obviously. But i haven't been able to resume running or exercise. Sitting for long periods makes it hurt, biking - forget it. RUnning is okay but only up to 2 miles. It hurts all the way up through my thigh and down to my ankle. It aches when i stand for long periods too. Any idea? I'm so frustrated. Is it possible the iliotibial band somehow got wrapped around my knee during surgery? No doubt in my mind that this was surgery related. Help!
