This will be kind of long so please bare with me:) I am a 33 year old female right above the knee amputee, and have destroyed my left knee by overuse. I have been a amputee since I was 6 and have never been able to wear a leg so I have worn out my only knee. I seen my first ortho Dr. about 2 years ago. He told me after x rays and mri that I had mild osteo in my knee. He did Synvisc injections and home theraphy and I had no relief. He scoped my knee on Aug. 2nd 2010. The surgery report read there was fracturing and delamination of the articular cartilage on the medial femoral condyle. I got no relief from the surgery and he didn't send me to physical theraphy right away so I ended up with a extension and flexion issue. I didn't get better and he blew me off saying too young and too high risk for anything else to be done. I had my general practioner refer me to another ortho. He is suppose to be the best in my area and has good reviews. I had literally the same treatment with him. He did shots, then surgery on Jan 12th 2011, he found defects on my tibia, patella, and my medial femoral condyle. Large defects and grade 3 with chondral flaps to the bone. He cleaned it up said he felt I would be good for a few years but would deal with some arthritis pain always. I had a rough go at physical theraphy, did 4 sessions a week and had no progress. My flexion has remained at about 95 and my extention is slightly off about-10 or so. I had more shots, Supartz this time and it has not worked, also have had several cortizone shots. At my last visit he said we would have to discuss replacement options if the shots didn't work. Well when I went for my appoint. I was expecting to hear some other options, instead he told me to try a unloader brace, which I think is silly being I walk on crutches with one leg seems hindering to me, and more theraphy. Then says come back in 4 months and if this don't help we will talk about options then. I feel like he just blew me off like the first ortho did. I don't think there is a ortho Dr. out there willing to do something to a amputee and someone my age. Does it sound like he has my best interest in mind or am I being blown off??? I am think time to seek another ortho again? Thanks for any input or suggestions you may have and again so sorry this is so very long!

I would suggest you see your physiotherapist again for appropriate rehabilitation and treatment or get an opinion from another physiotherapist regarding the management of your knee osteoarthritis. An appropriate knee brace may not be such a silly idea - as it is vital that your knee is rested adequately to ensure the healing process can take place, and this may be difficult given your circumstances.
