my unborn nephew had an enlarged right kidney shown on an ultrasound at about 18 wks gestation. then at about 25 weeks getstation there was nothing on the ultrasound. now yesterday at about 31 weeks gestation, my sister went for another ultrasound and they saw 8 cysts on his right kidney. the doc really didn't give my sister any information other than a piece of paper with the words "polycystic multi dysplastic kidney." i'm not understanding this because everything i've found so far is either called polycystic kidney disease or multicystic dysplastic kidney (which i believe is the same as hydronephrosis). can anyone add any info on this here for me?

  • I know this kind of late but I was also born with multicystic dysplastic kidney on the right.....which just means I was born with multiple cysts on my right side in place of the kidney. I am now 18 years old and the only problems Ive had was one cyst started to grow but stopped within a year or so and one or two UTI's. It is not life-threatening. However, the kidney can be more likely to fail, if not taken care of properly, within 30-40 years. And just be careful when playing contact sports because the kidney will be larger than normal and more likely to be damaged with a hard enough hit. my unborn nephew had an enlarged right kidney shown on an ultrasound at about 18 wks gestation. then at about 25 weeks getstation there was nothing on the ultrasound. now yesterday at about 31 weeks gestation, my sister went for another ultrasound and they saw 8 cysts on his right kidney. the doc really didn't give my sister any information other than a piece of paper with the words "polycystic multi dysplastic kidney." i'm not understanding this because everything i've found so far is either called polycystic kidney disease or multicystic dysplastic kidney (which i believe is the same as hydronephrosis). can anyone add any info on this here for me?
