I began taking lithium in 1988. Worked well for bi-polar but over the last 10 years I have repeatedly asked my doctors if I should be concerned about kidney failure.
Standard reply was creatine is fine, don't worry.
Well, here I am now with chronic kidney failure. (discovered with an ultra sound that was done to check gallbladder)

I stopped the lithium 2 months ago. So far mentally fine. I found a holistic herb, ignatia amara that really helps any mania beginning. I get the ignatia in one of those blue tubes sold at healthfood stores from Boiron. (also helps panic attacks)

Anyway, dr had prescribed 1800 mgs a day of motrin for arthritis pain. Can't mix motrin or NSAID's with lithium Now I can't take either and we are hoping the kidney damage will subside. It has caused a SEVERE lack of Vit D and my parathyroid is at 440. (quite high) Also have developed severe anemia.

I just wanted to share this warning. I filed an FDA report. Wondering about a lawsuit because I feel the dr should have known better.??

  • Why do you think the Lithium caused your kidney damage? Have you had a biopsy?I began taking lithium in 1988. There is a story in there about a woman who just like you (long time lithium use, kidney failure docs didn't recognize until it did major damage). She sued, and won. Lots of info on the net about things that should be well monitored during lithium use too. Best of Luck.
