Husband has diabettes. Was told that he now has 2nd degree kidney damage. This was determined by a 24 hr urine catch. The test was ordered due to high creatine levels. Just how serious is this?

  • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, hope he keeps his blood sugar and blood pressure in the proper levels, these are the main causes usually.I'm not too sure what you mean by stage 2, I assume you are referring to stage 2 kidney disease, meaning his kidney function is between 60-89%. If this is the case, then things are still good, depending on where he is in that range. His creatinine can be used to get that %. Either way, it is caught quite early which is a good thing. Talk to your doctor on how to control things. The goal will be to prevent any more damage and/or slow down the progress. The danger level would be below 30%, with 15% when dialysis or transplant will be needed. Just so you know, but this is very far away and you can avoid this, by acting now.Ask your doc to be referred to a nephrologist, he'll guide you on how to maintain the function. The first steps will be to keep Hb1ac to good levels, and blood pressure also. Then monitoring protein intake just a bit.Hope this helps.
