Do I need to have a non-functioning kidney removed?

I have an obstruction in my left ureter from scar tissue from a previous ureteroscopy/lithotripsy for stone removal two years ago. After ultrasound, CT and renal scan, it has been determined my left kidney has zero function. There is severe hydroureter, severe hydronephrosis and essentially nonexistent cortex remaining. My urologist and nephrologist don't indicate that it is urgent to remove the obstruction or the kidney unless I have symptoms of infection; i.e. fever and chills. However, for two years I didn't know my kidney was completely failing, so how do I know something else isn't being damaged just because I don't have any major symptoms of an infection. Do I wait until I am sick with fever, etc. to do something about it? Or should I go ahead and have the nephrectomy? My most recent urinalysis showed trace blood in the urine as well as Microalbumin at 109.4, Microalb/Creat Ratio of 58.2, Protein Total of 27.4, with elevated WBC 6-10 and elevated RBC of 3-10; negative for nitrites; however, still doctors show no urgency to relieve obstruction or remove kidney. Does this sound reasonable? I just don't feel like I have a good understanding of my condition. Is the urine just staying in the kidney and ureter to the point of the obstruction? Any info would be appreciated.
