I have a 13 yr old daughter who since she was small had dark strong smelling urine and constant symptoms of either uti or kidney infections only to be tested to find no actual infection except on the rare occasion. She seems to go through boughts of this where she has painful burning when urinating, going often in small amounts, dark urine, strong smelling, lower back pain, leg pain, discharge. We have gone through thinking it must be a bladder infection, kidney infection, even down to thinking she wasn't wiping as she should and causing irritation. We are at our wits end and are yet again set out to go to the ER and I am not leaving this time until they can tell us something! Anyone have any info, similar situation, advice????

Thanks!! Reagan

  • Have you seen a Nephrologist (Kidney Specialist)? Has anyone had your daughter collect a 24 hour urine sample? I know in many cases when kidney problems are suspected, the 24 hour collection is recommended, because sometimes a single specimen will not give accurate results. I would also recommend doing this during one of her episodes. You should be able to get the correct kind of sterilized container for this from the dr.Hope this helps..best of luck!:)

We ended up in the er again and actually got a nurse who was very helpful, and got the names of some tests she said we should demand from a doctor - a vcug and an ultrasound of her kidneys and bladder. I will ask about collecting a 24 hr urine also, don't know why I didn't think of that also. We just moved and while at the er I got the names of some doctor's in our area and we have an appt on Mon the 27th to specifically discuss these issues so wish us luck. They gave her two prescriptions, one for an antibiotic just to cover any infection that might be there even though the urine was basically clean, she said there were a few bacteria, and the medicine that numbs the urinary tract which is the only way she can stay out of the bathroom constantly Again thank you for your reply and thoughts!!
