I had Rheumatic fever when I was 9 and I am now 50. I live in the tablelands of nsw australia. So winter is pretty cold and summer very hot. However at this stage of my life I find that my joints and bones are aching all the time and I was wondering if anybody else wonders if they have the same symptoms is it related to rheumatic fever and if so is there any research ongoing. I know of one other person who has the same problems, similar age but she also had heart damage when she was a child.

  • I also had Rheumatic fever at the same age. Some doctors tend to think that this diagnosis is often wrongly given instead of Hypermobility Syndrome Aged 17 aching joints, Tendonitis, Raynauds, Perennial Rhinitis, backpain(ignored doctor's complaint that I was too young to be getting backpain, refused steriods and to go for xrays) Aged 22 Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Erlers Danlos Syndrome, Hypermobility Syndrome, Depression, Orthostatic Hypotension, Plantar Fasciitis, Valgus Hindfeet, Scoliosis, Cervical Spondylosis (affects people over the age of 50). Awaiting test for brain injury, renal failure, lupus, heart condition, etc

  • Hi im a 22 yr old woman and I had rheumatic fever when I was 9 years old as well. It took the hospital 6 weeks to figure out I had it, while during that time I was very very ill. I almost died. I now have 2 damaged valves (aortic and mitral). I have been on penicillin injections since I was 9 and have recently been told that I will be having them for the rest of my life! I was also told (after a heart eco) that they will not replace my valves for another 10 to 15 years as they are not seriously damaged enough. They said I cant have a baby because my heart will not be able to support me and the baby. Im very devastated. I have sensitive skin and cant stand things like someone rubbing my arm lightly or anything. I also have sore and aching joints a lot. When I walk my thigh joints click and I have very stiff and sore neck and shoulders. My legs are very weak. I need to exercise because I am slightly over weight but I find it uncomfortable because of my joints and I lose my breath easily. I have suffered from fatigue, depression and anxiety on and off since I was 14 years old. Im sure that joint problems are caused from having rheumatic fever because I was fine and fit before I had it. Now I feel like a walking disaster! Hope my story helps a bit and would love to hear back from anyone with feedback.
